Blackmailed by programminghomeworkhelp.com.DND Should I worry?

With just over 24 hours left before an assignment was due I paid a website to do an assignment for me, but was worried after I didn't hear back from them, so I then went to programminghomeworkhelp.com.DND and paid them too (part in advance, with the rest expected on completion).

Student BlackmailIn the morning, I heard back from the first site, and it was completed satisfactorily. I tried cancelling with programminghomeworkhelp, but they said it was almost complete. However, I didn't hear anything back from then until 10 days after the deadline has pasded and the course ending, where I get an email from them saying:

Hi, [the following paragraph is written in all red]

The balance payment has not been made yet. We will wait for 12 hours for the balance payment to be made. If we still do get the payment in the next 12 hours, then we will post the assignment, solution, and your complete details online, mentioning that you took the solution from us but did not pay us.Even after that, if you don't pay, then we will send all the above details to your school.

[They post my full name and address here; I used my card instead of PayPal when I sent them the initial $100, which is how they probably got it]

On the bright side, I don't believe that they know my university. On the other hand, I did use a different site to complete the assignment. Since then, I've been doing some investigation, and they seem to be part of programmingassignmentexperts.com.DND, which I have seen other people on here report as a scam.

I have about 5 hours before the deadline that they gave me, and I want to know how credible their threat is. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Good News/Bad News:

The good news is that if they didn't provide the work until 10 days after your deadline, you don't owe them the balance because the deadline was an essential element of the transaction. You can probably dispute the deposit with your credit card company for that reason, too; just provide them with the emails. There's no such thing as "attempted academic dishonesty," and you never received -- much less submitted -- their work for credit, because they didn't send it until way after your deadline had already passed. They don't know where you go to school, anyway, although it's not too difficult for them to find that out using the information that you divulged.

The bad news is that Google results last forever. If they choose to post all of that info online, it will pop up every time a prospective employer (or anybody else) Googles you for the foreseeable future. Employers (unlike academic ethics committees) will definitely consider that type of information even though you never submitted the work for academic credit at your school. With the stacks of resumes that they receive for every decent position (especially nowadays), no employer is going to bother interviewing any candidate if the employer's preliminary screening reveals anything potentially derogatory, especially about academic dishonesty. They won't give you a chance to explain, either; they'll simply discard your application.

Depending on how much the initial deposit was, you might try telling them that you're going to let them keep it instead of disputing that charge with your credit card company based on the missed deadline, but that you won't be paying the balance for a project that they provided 10 days after your specified deadline; and that if you discover that they actually publicized any of your information, you will immediately proceed to recover that deposit through your credit card company.

Good luck.

It's too late for the OP, but for anybody else reading this: the time to do your due dilligence researching essay providers who can be trusted is always before you place an order, never only afterwards.

This is why you should never use your bank cards for dealing with academic companies online. You unwittingly give your private data to them, for future blackmail use. Since the paper was never used, you don't have to worry. They are not going to do it. The time essential blackmail format has been successfully used over time by these companies because the students always cave. Let the timer end. See what happens. If you see they posted anything about you online, seek legal representation to get it taken down. I have had students come to me with similar problems. The company never actually does it. However, I always ask the student to seek legal representation, just in case.

The OP has not updated this post since then so nobody really knows how this story ended. Some of these cases have happy endings and the students speak of their success here. Others seem to resolve the case under a non-disclosure agreement and never speak of nor show up at this forum again.
