The following is an excellent 'Lived Experience' essay for a nursing student if someone needs a reference on how to write their own nursing paper (for scholarship or admissions)
The experience that has been lived thus far as a baccalaureate nursing student has be rewarding and personally enjoyable. However, it has also required a change in thinking in terms of the work that has been involved and the experiences that have occurred. The program was entered with a good GPA in the pre-requisite courses. There was a great deal of enthusiasm and excitement to leave behind the pre-requisite classes and to truly get involved in the nursing courses. Even more, it felt great to be told by professors that being in the program meant the students were professionals and should think of themselves as such.

One of the things that was not nice about starting the nursing program was the white uniforms. It felt weird to have to wear the white uniforms on a daily basis. It also felt weird to wear them outside of class. It seemed as though everyone who was encountered immediately noticed the white uniform and even asked questions about being a nurse or nursing student. However, the self-consciousness about wearing the white uniform soon left and the happy feeling about being in the nursing program continued.
One of the serious obstacles that was encountered with being in the nursing program was the greater amount of work and studying that had to be performed in order to maintain a high GPA. After the first semester in the nursing program, the grades that were received were lower than expected. A plan had to be developed so that the GPA that was expected, at least from a personal standpoint, could be achieved. First, an understanding of the N-Clex questions had to be obtained in order to appreciate the type of information that needed to be learned. Secondly, the amount of studying that was performed increased greatly.
Currently, the study schedule that is used is on a daily basis from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Most of the studying is performed on campus, and usually in the library. This allows focus to be maintained on the work. It also prevents becoming distracted by the computer or wanting to surf the internet over studying. This studying program has allowed the grades in the nursing program courses to return to what they were in the pre-requisite courses. The work can be difficult, but the rewards of not only achieving a strong GPA but also feeling a personal level of mastery of the information is exciting.
Another obstacle that had to be overcome was the discomfort of being videotaped and the general fear of simulation days. At first, watching the videos and going through the simulations was somewhat disconcerting. However, the benefit of these exercises was quickly realized and became more enjoyable. There was a certain level of self-awareness and self-consciousness with the videotaping that never fully went away.
Finally, confidence about the personal mastery of the information that has been learned increased upon receiving a $1,200.00 scholarship. Even more, having professors give their recommendations to provide junior-level students with tutoring provided another boost in confidence. Overall, the nursing program has been a rewarding experience, and has also shown the positive outcomes that are possible when hard work and dedication is committed to the process. The goal is for this feeling of excitement and personal fulfillment to continue through the rest of the nursing program, and certainly into a nursing career. If the previous semesters have been any indication, the future will indeed be very challenging, but also very rewarding with each new accomplishment.
