What are your short-term and long-term post-MBA goals? How will Columbia Business School help you achieve these goals?

In fervent recognition that lifelong learning is integral to both professional and personal success, I am beyond certain that the curriculum at Columbia Business School (CBS) will support me in achieving my future goals. My previous, graduate education in conjunction with my professional experience, including my current position as an Executive Education Account Manager at CBS, has afforded me a clear-cut vision for my academic path. The staff and students at CBS , many of whom I have already grown to know well, will undoubtedly serve to channel the global entrepreneurship curriculum, and I look forward to playing a critical role within the CBS population.

MBA Study GoalsMy short-term goals are rooted in completing projects already begun as an Account Manager for CBS, seeking out and fulfilling volunteer opportunities with the New York City Chapter of the American Red Cross, and continuing to embrace chances to pursue channels for learning in the complementary realms of global business strategy, Asian markets, and international business leadership. Additionally, I have designed a recently launched program for CBS that unites professors from Cheung Kong GSB and CBS in academic discourse that I will continue to fine-tune and ensure that the program exists at the height of its potential efficacy. As my most recent performance review suggests, I am excelling in my professional role as Account Manager in the Executive Education Department and I genuinely relish the opportunities presented to me there.

After completing my time at CBS, my interim goal is to attain a position within an international, Asian firm. This position will bridge the gap between my short-term and long-term agendas by allowing me to practically apply that which I learned during my time at CBS. The global marketplace is an ever-expanding, consistently in flux entity that demands flexibility, cultural sensitivity, and, above all, a pioneering spirit. In relinquishing trepidations common to operations within developing nations, a single entity can surmount minimal obstacles using a modicum of cultural sensitivity. A wholehearted believer that one must first work for a company before creating a company with a similar mission, this position will hone my ability to apply academic experience to genuine, international strategy

By extension and with respect to my long-term vision, my ultimate goal is to build upon all previous experiences- academic, personal, and professional- and entrepreneurially expand on those foundations. I aim to create and actively run an internal, business company that specifically aims to penetrate, cultivate, and expand existing Asian markets. Within my own company, I will fuse my dedication to corporate stewardship and social responsibility with that of savvy, ethical business practices. In condemning acts of unethical behavior on every level of a corporation and conversely heralding behaviors that promote global and environmental consciousness, I will truly be able to run a successful, globally flourishing company.

Overall, Columbia University has already afforded me a myriad of opportunities. My M.S. in Negotiations and Conflict Resolution from the institution, for me, has highlighted the elite, globally minded curriculum inherent to Columbia's programs. My relationships with Savio Tung, a Columbia University Trustee, and Paul Calello, CEO and Executive Board member for the Credit Suisse Group, have fostered further recognition that dedication and lifelong learning are paramount to any successful professional. Additionally, CBS alumni and my uncle, Jeff Shen, has consistently supported my work and education with the institution and assured me that CBS is undoubtedly the optimum path on which I should embark.

CBS' unwavering cognizance of how critical ethics is to organizational leadership has been the defining element for me in selecting graduate institutions, and I fervently aim to embody the behaviors so valued by CBS within my short-term and long-term goals; I have the experience with international relations, global travel, and multicultural communications that the current business world demands; I have the sensitivity toward community and environment that future society demands; I have the entrepreneurial savvy to channel all of these elements into a single, successful firm.

While my entrepreneurial endeavors are a few years in the future, knowledge integrated into my long-term goals is cumulative. Keenly aware that all goals need the proverbial wiggle room in order to be effectively entrenched into life's unexpected circumstances, I am constantly modifying and honing my professional and personal vision for the future. However, admission to CBS is undoubtedly the critical next step in achieving my short-term and long-term agendas, and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to be considered for such an elite program.
