From an early age, I understood that the decisions one makes can change the course of one's life. I watched my parents' hard work pay off, and understood that this was no accident, but a decision they had made. When it came time to face my own future, I made a decision that I knew would be life-changing and risky: I decided to leave my home country of Korea and to come to the United States to study. I knew that the US was where I could receive the best possible education, especially since I have a strong interest in technology. As a child, I was always taking things apart to learn how they worked, and this fascination has continued in recent years. To maximize my potential in any technological field, I knew I needed to go to the best possible schools, so I took a deep breath and made a leap of faith, moving halfway around the world to attend Vernon Community College.

Business StudyVCC allowed me the opportunity to earn both my high school diploma and an Associates degree, which I will soon complete, majoring in business. Attending the school has been a remarkable experience for me, opening my eyes to amazing career possibilities I never would have thought of and allowing my to expand my horizons by participating in extracurricular activities like interning with the College Activities Board, part of the student leadership at my school . I've challenged myself and am proud to share stories with friends and family at home in Korea. Learning in a new language has been a struggle, and maintaining my GPA has taken unrelenting focus, but I know that my efforts have made me not just better-educated, but a stronger and more mature individual as well.

I've also been able to improve my language skills and leadership by working as a Teacher's Assistant. Tutoring and meeting with students one on one has gotten me much more comfortable with interacting in English, and I relish the opportunity to help students who are as lost in academia as I once was. This experience has been, perhaps, my favorite part of college outside the classroom, and it's something I would love to continue doing which I get my next degree, as a peer tutor or TA.

My studies in business have inspired me to plan to return to my home country and establish a new business, and the next step toward doing that is to move beyond the confines of community college and obtain a bachelor's degree. I hope to major in Information Systems, a field in which I can combine my business acumen with my fascination with technology. In today's global business climate, being comfortable in Korean and English and both Asian and American cultures can be a huge asset for me.

The University of West Virginia is a perfect fit for me. It combines the rigorous academics and amazing resources of a large and prestigious university with a location in a city I'd love to explore, in a part of the country known for being business-friendly and welcoming to recent immigrants like me. The fact that the school is located in one of the fastest-growing technology corridors in the country means that WV is exactly where I need to be to get my next degree. Acceptance would be the start of a dream come true: one that will, indeed, like all big decisions, change my life.
