My name is Emily, and I am a hippie weirdo. Green is my favourite colour, and I completed a bachelor's degree in Geography. I love academic research, writing and learning new things, and I also have strong interests in working hands-on. While I am doing that, I would like to continue exploring my interest in academic writing. My ultimate goal is to get into a skilled trade so that I can work for myself learning a real-world skill that I can use to help my neighbours and others in my community. I consider myself a budding ecological engineer, with a passion for understanding both the theoretical and real-world applications of sustainability. Indeed, I am a hippie.
I suppose all of this makes me sound kind of boring. Just add me to the list of all those folks who want to save the world. However, here's what makes me different: I love math and science. My academic background is a combination of environmental, scientific, and mathematical. In addition to my training in geography and environmental studies, I have also taken courses in a variety of sciences, and completed mathematics training up to Calculus III. While completing math courses outside of my degree, I worked at my university's library for five years. On my breaks, I browsed every section of the stacks to see what kind of obscure books I could find. When we were working on a project that involved discarding books that hadn't been used in decades, I was thrilled to thumb through those dusty tomes.
My brain was immersed in the physical and academic environment in which research takes place, and an interest in working with this kind of knowledge has never left me. Since learning new things is one of my favourite pastimes, it seems only natural to me that I would turn to helping others with their research and writing. I am excited to contribute my skills to a freelance academic writing career.
My unique combination of interests, aptitudes and abilities has made me an excellent research writer for several reasons. First, I have no trouble spending hours sifting through dense academic journals to find the perfect papers to support points made in my essays. My powers of concentration are such that I have no problem focusing on any given task and seeing it through until it is completed to the best of my ability. My concentration is augmented by a love of precision resulting from my mathematical and scientific background. Formatting in-text citations, tweaking reference lists, and learning new citation styles are all tasks I find enjoyable. Putting the final touches on a paper gives me a feeling of intense satisfaction; there's nothing like seeing a perfectly formatted reference list at the end of a fine essay.
While my sense of exactness helps me enjoy writing dry engineering project proposals or staid business plans, I also enjoy injecting a dose of creativity into my research writing whenever I can. Take the essay on water I wrote for one of my clients. I could've written something very straightforward, dryly explaining the physical and chemical properties of water, putting their importance into an environmental context. However, the client was instructed to be creative, so I did just that. I performed the usual academic research, finding all the sources necessary to support my arguments. Then, I unleashed my creative spirit. I wove a post-apocalyptic tale in which most of the world's water supply was undrinkable, incorporating science into my story. The client received 100% for this paper. This is one example of many that exemplify the self-discipline, precision, and creativity that make me an excellent academic writer.
