Why do so many students hate homework?



Many grown-ups, from doctors to truck drivers, will readily admit that, back in their childhood days, homework was an object of little desire and much procrastination. If it wasn't for their parents' strictness, homework would never be given a priority over TV and playtime. Even now, regardless of the cultural differences in generations, the resentment to homework still remains constant and universal. Students trudge through 7 hours of the day, with their minds obligated to understand all the diverse knowledge that teachers pile on them, only for them to unwillingly sacrifice an extra two to three hours in the evening to subdue their minds into absorbing more learning. It is no wonder that homework is not remotely celebrated as it is hated, especially for some dominant reasons.

Unnecessary Pressure from Parents

Most students claim that upon reaching home, all they hear from their parents are instructions to go complete their homework. The parents may think that that is what responsible parenting entails; however, such misunderstanding about the immediate needs of the child becomes a basis for friction within the family. Such behavior has not been observed to foster motivation, but even worse, breeds resentment. The child prefers to indulge in other non-school activities and rid themselves off the monotony of constant learning. If a parent does not understand that, a likelihood for tension within the relationship develops, and depression may easily set in.

Sleep Deprivation in Students

The observed trend is that, the older the students, the more homework they receive. Middle grade and high school students are the most affected, with up to three hours and above every single night bound to relentless studying. In a child's developmental years, sleep is detrimental to their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Therefore, when incurring a sleep deficit day after day, students become emotionally at edge, mentally unreceptive and academically incompetent to bear with the pressure to perform in school. Sleep deprivation is counterproductive to academic excellence. Students who aren't performing in school were recorded to have an average of 25 to 40 minutes shorter sleep than the achievers (Robert & Debra, 2007). Unfortunately, misinformed teachers and school directors wrongly translate the incidence of students failing in class as a reason to give more homework.

Conclusion

After all the years of research on homework and its effects, there is still no definite conclusion that the allocation of homework is directly related to a student's achievement in class. Infact, mounting studies indicate that even a high quantity of homework does not positively affect a student's progress in school. More often than not, students witness this first hand in their academic lives. Upon this realization, it is comparatively hard to motivate these students into having a positive outlook on this after-school engagement.
