I used to think plagiarism only meant copying someone else's work word for word. Turns out that's not really true.
One of my assignments got flagged even though I wrote it myself. The issue was similar phrasing from sources and notes I'd used while researching. It was super frustrating because the ideas were mine, but the wording apparently wasn't unique enough.
Since then, I've added a quick step before submitting anything important. After finishing my draft, I run it through a free plagiarism remover tool, then I go through it myself and make small edits where needed. It helps clean up overlapping phrases without changing what I'm trying to say.
Not saying this replaces proper writing or citations, but it's definitely helped me avoid last-minute panic and awkward conversations with instructors. Posting this in case it helps someone else.
