Hi there

I wrote a review article and got it ckecked through turnitin for plagiarism it turned out to be 18%. I re-wrote the highlighted parts and ran it again in turnitin. This time it showed 100% plagiarism. As it matched my 2nd submission against the 1st one.

I am extremely worried now. Will the scientific journal consider my work as plagiarised??
should I re-write the whole document again?

I am a molecular biologist, writing for almost 3 years. but used turnitin for plegrism check for the v.first time.
I didn't check the "no repository" option and my genuine work became a part of turnitin repository now, which i was supposed to submitt to a scientific journal.

Help if u can in this regard.

If the report shows where the original came from and the timing of your successive submissions, I would think that your only possible issue might be from the initial 18%, but it probably depends more on the criteria and rules used by the editors of the journal involved.

Who is the account administrator of that turnitin account. It must be associated with a university/college. Contact them and explain. If satisfied, they can request turnitin to remove this paper from their repository.

It is from another post
"Thank you for contacting the Turnitin Help Desk regarding your paper.
Please contact your instructor regarding paper deletion. For contractual
reasons all paper deletion requests must be submitted by the account
administrator."

Thanks

Here is a problem student who sent me a conversation between her and a freelance writer. It's related to Turnitin and plagiarism. I tried to help her and I hope this experience can be taken as good advice for other students.

STUDENT

Turnitin Plagiarism StudentOkay, here's the problem I have now. The first paper was already submitted into turnitin and is apparently in their data base forever. My second submission will of course be a match to the other paper. Before I submit, I was told to mention in the 'comments' section that my paper was previously submitted but then I cancelled that submission, so then the grader will know to check it against that first submission (am I makingsense). The problem now is that the highlighted parts that were copied and pasted in the original paper was only paraphrased in the second. It came from the same source (another student's paper) but paraphrased. We used her ideas and her sources. This could be a red flag for me. I was promised an original paper, not paraphrased from another source. Can you please help me?

And even though I cancelled my submission to the school, it already ran in turnitin so they do have a copy of the original paper (I called turnitin myself and confirmed this because I also purchased writercheck from them). I cannot have them remove it in their data base because it went through the school's portal. The parts highlighter in turnitin that I mentioned in my earlier email to you were copied from another student's paper (it matched 28-30% from utica college) i showed the person from support before the link expired. I know the sources are valid, however, if they compare the first paper to the second one (which they will do to confirm that they were both my submissions) they will see that the highlighted parts (copied parts) were only paraphrased. That will be a problem. I do see that the annotated bibliography (except for 2 articles I mentioned) were original. However these are the parts that were highlighted (I looked at turnitin link numerous times before it expired): The ENTIRE first and second paragraph (even though you corrected it, you left some parts in there that were word per word highlighted in turnitin) The second paragraph in Type of Research Study, The ENTIRE Problem Statement, 2 articles in the annotated bibliography (LOUD AND GARG), and Importance of Using a Theoretical Model-first paragraph I received a copy of a revised paper but again, the paraphrasing will be a red flag. The annotated bib sources are okay, except for those 2 articles. But you left the entire problem statement in there and parts of the revised version still has some of the highlighted parts in turnitin (e.g. . An overview of the condition is provided, including a discussion of its pathology and management. An article critique is provided, including a table examining the five areas of a research report. Imaging is then examined as it pertains to deep vein thrombosis. The application of this knowledge to the field of physical therapy is offered, followed by a conclusion highlighting the most important points of this paper.)

So here is my question, will you be able to provide me with an original paper, and not paraphrased with parts copied from another. At this point, the paper sounds good but it's a combination of original and copied-pasted parts. If I ran this again by writecheck, which is also owned by turnitin, will it pass? Please let me know now so I can consider other options. If your answer to my question is yes, I sent you 3 articles that can replace the 2 that I mentioned above. If you can touch base with me as soon as possible, I would really appreciate it.

Let's see here, so turnitin kept a copy on file of your first submission, even though you cancelled it. That was my work, so reworded or > not, the sources are valid, not someone elses ideas, not sure how that would work into this here.....seems like using different sources is the best way to go and referencing direct page numbers of those new sources....I can use different sources I think and it should be fine.

Unfortunately, I cannot get to this before tomorrow night/Tuesday morning, in order to do this right. Will that work for you?

PS. so i did run the revision through dustball plagiarism detector which gave it a "go", but is she having a valid point here that turnitin will raise redflags on it?

I did revise just about the whole intro part she is talking about, its not but a few pages, so no biggee to totally use different sources etc. But it sounds like it is going to be linked to the other paper via turnitin just because of the truly original part.

This is why I always ask students to do random Google searches for possible matches rather than submitting their work to plagiarism checking websites. These sites tend to house the original documents in their server which poses a problem when you do a second plagiarism check using the same system. Turnitin makes it extremely difficult for students to complete their papers due to their record keeping system. That is why I tell the students to never submit to TurnItIn. Leave that to the professors and teachers. That is the only way to ensure that no plagiarism will be detected by the system. I don't suggest writing a 2nd version of the paper because you may end up making a simple problem even worse because you will not be changing your sources. Instead, offer a copy of the 2 plagiarism reports to the scientific journals and explain the situation. That would be you dealing with them transparently, allowing them the option to accept or reject your work based on their own plagiarism regulations for their publication. Don't fret just because TurnItIn said your paper was plagiarized. There is no such thing as self-plagiarism.

Turnitin is just like Grammarly, they retain license ownership and copies of your work. That is why it will always come across as plagiarized either to a certain extent or in totality (if a 2nd submission is done). However, if the scientific journal does not use Turnitin for the submissions they check for plagiarism then you should be in the clear. To play safe though, I believe that it would be best to ask the publisher or editor about what software they use to check for plagiarism and then explain your situation. Opting to paraphrase your original work in an effort to have to come up as non-plagiarizes is a good option in my opinion. It allows you to retain the original content and message of the old paper while changing the presentation. That always make it a totally new paper and should come up as plagiarism free. Just remember not to run it by Turnitin this time.

I'm with @WriteReview and @Smiley73 on this one. I'd show the original and the second to the journal's editor or publisher.

There is no such thing as self-plagiarism.

However, there is a such thing as self-plagiarism and many universities have amended their academic policies to include that exact wording. It is being defined as using one's past work to submit for a current/new project versus performing new work for a current project. Nevertheless, I understand that's not the OP's issue here. Unless the OP is trying to pass off a past article he/she wrote as a new article, they aren't self-plagiarizing.

Side note: I hate the term and concept of self-plagiarizing. I get that professors want students to create new, unique projects every time, but when a current project covers information a student has previously written about, I don't see the harm in using part of their past work. After all, it is THEIR past work. At the very least, I think it should be allowed with the student citing his/her previous paper. Still, I think that's overkill, but it would make more sense that an all-out ban on using your own work (in part) again. It would be totally different if a student was attempting to turn in the exact same paper over and over, but to use parts... I don't agree with the university policies against using any part. (Edited to add: That a prime example of why I am writing and not teaching! )

I just want to make sure that nobody confuses the reference to a freelance writer in Post #6 with me because I was not the "FREELANCE WRITER" referred to in that post or anywhere else in this thread. I hate the term and concept of self-plagiarizing.

Some professors believe that if the student uses any part of their old paper, that means they either did not learn anything in the new class or, they are just too lazy to come up with new theories and concepts of their new research paper. I find that laughable. If they have a source material limit of 5 years, and the student used current information in a paper written the previous semester, then his research from that time should be a valid source for the new paper.

I really disagree with the term self-plagiarism as that means one is copying oneself. How can that be when oneself is considered an original in all aspects, including when he writes his own paper and references himself as the source of that information in his next paper? Professors can really go on a maddening power trip at times.
