How Hard Is It to Break into the Academic Writing Business?

Student BreakThere is a clear market for both company and independent academic writers these days. Students are now, more than ever, being swamped with academic paper work regardless of their educational level. High school students need to deal with essay papers, college students struggle with research and essay papers. Both require academic writing assistance. That is why the academic writer career is one of the fastest growing fields of writing in the 21st century.

If the writer knows how to persevere and has excellent people skills, he will be sure to bring in a decent amount of money for himself in this career.

While there is room for any person who has decent writing skills in this field, not everyone who tries to make a career out of it are successful. That is because they do not understand that writing competency is the biggest requirement for an academic writer. Fluency in English, whether it be British, American, Canadian, or Australian English is a must. Along with that, a completed college education will help the writer become a serious player in this increasingly competitive game.

Writing companies often open their application season for new writers during the September to October months. They time the hiring of the writers with the start of the school season so that they will have a solid staff of writers to handle the so-called "hot season" which normally happens from October to February. That is when the demand for academic writers are at its highest due to the volume of papers that students must write. If you are interested in becoming an academic writer but are not sure that you have what it takes, try to find a writing company that is currently hiring and apply for the job. The results of your application test should tell you if you should be serious about pursuing this as a career or not.

This is the perfect job for a new college graduate or someone just looking to work part time. You set your work hours and can earn as much or as little as you want, depending upon your work hours or desire to work. There is no dress code for this job, work wearing your pajamas if you want to. Just makes sure that you submit the paper to the student on the deadline.

If you are lucky enough to get a spot at an academic writing company or if you manage to score some clients on your own, make sure that you honor the Academic Writer's Code: Quality above all else. Then you should not have a problem breaking into the business big-time.

Welcome to the forum. At first, your best bet at getting your foot in the door is simply to get yourself hired by an essay company.

I don't want to have a boss :) Freelancing is giving me more freedom. At least that was the case a few years ago; now it's a struggle.

Actually, all essay-company writers are freelancers. Essay companies don't really function as "bosses," per se; they just take their cut from your projects. Obviously, it's better to work entirely independently, as I have for the last 10 years; it's just that it's very difficult to build up a sufficiently large clientele to make a living entirely on your own, especially at first. That's why just about any successful independent writer started off writing for essay companies, first.

OR how about creating your own website and promoting it? But that would take a new set of skills on top of writing...

I have to agree with you. Freelancing for academic writing companies isn't what it used to be. There are several companies that I know of which have actually put a freeze hire instruction in place. There just aren't enough orders to go around their writers pool these past few months / years. However, freelancing in other avenues like copywriting and blogging, or writing Vlog scripts are on the rise. Most academic writers that I know have already transitioned or begun to transition from academic writing since there are more work opportunities in those fields at the moment. The academic writing industry at this point has tapered off to the point where there are too many participants, not enough clients, even for freelancers. The long term freelancers who already have an existing client base could be considered lucky, but then their client base is also difficult to maintain at this point since money is fast becoming a major consideration for the clients. Not to say that the client base will not grow, just that it will be slower than before.

Hang in there and keep the faith. It is better to work for yourself than to work with a company, even as a conduit or middleman. They just muddle the situation most of the time. I also do not believe a writer is still a freelancer when attached to a company since the company has the power to reassign an order, penalize a writer for certain violations, and can call you any time of the day or night to fulfill an order. That sounds like a boss to me. Yes, I know, this may relate only to the 3rd world writing companies, but there are more of them in the business as of now.

Thank you. Btw - does Paypal still ban "academic writers" or I could use it to accept payments? I used to have a Paypal account but it was closed a few years ago.

PayPal now accepts payments for academic writers under a special digital goods category. Both freelancers and academic writing companies may use that charge system to bill and receive payments. The only problem is that they put a 2 week hold on the money you receive in case of charge backs. If the client clears the payment immediately, then you can access it sooner than 2 weeks.

Yup. Let's put it this way, PayPal is first and foremost a business. Therefore, they need to cater to all existing and future client bases. They were not only losing out on big money by banning these companies, they also had a problem with the companies calling their actions discriminatory hence, the backtrack on the decision. They simply reworded their payment sections to allow the writing companies and freelancers to continue using their services. PayPal will never say No to money coming in. They'lljust dance around the law with vagueness whenever they can.
