Introductory Note
Although it's always difficult to provide a correct assessment of one's work, my experience as an academic researcher has given me some new insights which I will discuss here, considering both personal and professional perspectives. I would like to provide a detailed analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of working as an academic researcher. I aim to provide an objective analysis, although this discussion would be substantially guided by my personal experiences and experiences of other freelance academic writers.
Freelance academic writing is a challenging job as it necessitates high levels of learning, reading, and writing skills among researchers. Academic writing jobs are only suitable for highly educated researchers and individuals with an inclination towards academic research. I will first consider some of the advantages of academic writing and why it is rewarding to freelance writers and researchers.
1. Helping students via online tutoring - Many freelance academic writers begin this job not for money, but for altruistic reasons. They want to genuinely help individuals who are unable to comprehend complex projects due to linguistic, health or other limitations. I was a tutor for undergraduate students and found some of them struggling with their coursework. Many students needed extra help. I signed up with a company providing online tutoring to undergraduate students because I genuinely wanted to help. The job is rewarding because finally many students are able to overcome their writing or learning difficulties through online tutoring programs. Academic researchers also help other teachers to prepare their coursework, students with learning disabilities and even professionals.
2. Developing your own writing skills as you can write your own papers, develop presentations for conferences, journals, and write articles and blogs at ease. Academic researchers write on diverse topics and subject areas. Their knowledge explodes and writing skills improve exponentially. Academic researchers become expert writers and can write about any topic, because writing is one skill which one can develop through constant practice and practice makes people perfect. This is one of the reasons I love academic writing because I can write about anything, I have almost abolished the 'writer's block' and always feel ready to write. I have presented several conference papers around the world, and academic writing has improved my writing and presentation skills immensely. Academic writers can prepare presentations and speeches within minutes and can become excellent bloggers, journalists and article writers.
3. Learning something new almost daily, it is very satisfying. Academic writing can sometimes be a very satisfying experience. For example, you may be politics graduate and know something about the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) but you may want to know the details. You may not have the time to go back and read the details of the trade deal, but as an academic researcher when you get a project on TPP, you learn everything about it and finally satisfy your curiosity. With every project, academic researchers learn something new. They learn about new topics, process new information, become well-informed and become more socially, technologically and politically aware. There are so many diverse topics to choose from, that it is highly exhilarating to a curious, knowledge-hungry academic researcher.
4. Flexibility - time, place, content. The best part of academic writing is that you are your own boss, you get to make your own decisions and you get to choose your own projects. Academic writers enjoy great flexibility in terms of project topics, fees or their level of income, time and place of work. Academic writers can write about any topic, they can write from anywhere, they can choose their level of income and they can choose when they want or don't want to work. They may want to work 20 hours in a day in the month of April and one hour a day in the month of May, there is immense flexibility in their schedule. They can travel around the world and keep working and earning money. Things don't often get better than that.
5. Freedom of lifestyle - travel, work from anywhere, no office politics, skip the routine. Freedom and flexibility are the most attractive aspects about being an academic researcher. Many academic researchers are full time writers because they believe in equality, they need freedom, they want to avoid office politics, they don't want to be controlled by supervisors. This is because most writers are very intelligent, and with their knowledge and ability, they might become objects of unnecessary control in a traditional work environment. Many academic researchers want to avoid the drudgery, the mindless routine or the rigidity of 9-5 office jobs. Some researchers take up academic writing because they need supplementary income so they do maintain their office jobs. They also need flexibility and freedom and freelance writing seems like the right kind of job for these individuals.
6. Academic writing pays really well, you're making money doing what you like. It's possible to argue that all kinds of freelance work offer freedom, then why do we choose academic writing? It is true that as a freelance journalist or a freelance software engineer you can work from anywhere and might enjoy the same level of freedom. However academic researchers enjoy the flexibility to choose subject areas and topics. They can also choose the type of projects they wish to write on and they get paid really well. They do not make millions but they get decent pay, some earn substantial additional income and they develop knowledge and writing skills which add to their experience and can actually help them to become great communicators, managers, travel writers, entrepreneurs and educators in the future.
7. Interaction with students or teachers is sometimes an insightful experience, developing social and life skills. Academic writers are sometimes given the opportunity to directly interact with their clients. That is a very enriching experience because we learn a lot about customers, their issues and problems. I have helped students with debilitating and chronic illnesses and helped them to get their degrees and diplomas and I am proud of what I have done and I am keen to work with more such clients.
8. Academic writing makes you a knowledgeable, socially aware and complete human being. Academic researchers write about the most relevant topics that shapes modern society so this job makes you more socially and technologically aware. You become a knowledgeable, aware and a complete human being. You develop empathy and social skills, you are a more evolved human as you learn so much within a short period and knowledge helps you to grow and develop insights and understanding about everything. I have gained so much knowledge as an academic researcher that I have developed significant insights about people, places and diverse topics, technologies, cultures and events around the world. As a result, I have become a more open-minded, empathetic, evolved and patient human being.
9. Writing about diverse subjects helps to keep track of the latest trends in technology, business, law, media, education, politics, social changes. This is one of significant advantages of academic writing. Academic researchers learn a lot about the latest trends in law, technology, media, politics because Universities are constantly updating their curricula and over the years courseworks in all subjects have become more relevant and topical. Academic researchers are thus very knowledgeable about different subjects and are aware of latest technological, political and social trends. They also become more aware of current affairs, social changes, news and policies around the world.
10. Academic researchers, become very learned, knowledgeable. General knowledge improves and becomes very comprehensive, you discover your genius - Writing about several topics and related subject areas is not just an exciting experience, it is also a learning experience as academic researchers increase their general knowledge drastically within a few days of working as a researcher. Academic researchers write on any topic within hours and develop their abilities and writing genius quickly and easily, so academic research is always a great choice for freelance writers.
