Education has increasingly become the ultimate path to success in a highly competitive economy. As such, students are now under immense pressure to achieve better grades. The primary rationale behind the preceding assertion is that academic failure portends a grim future in terms of economic and social development. Although numerous learning practices exist to facilitate academic success, homework has remained a feasible strategy to improve students' performance. Conversely, the majority of students hate doing homework. The students' negative attitude toward homework will potentially affect their performance in school.

Educators believe firmly that learners improve their skills and mastery of classroom ideas when they complete home-based exercises. On the other hand, homework subjects the students to unnecessary stress. Many students are now devising every possible technique to avoid doing their homework at all costs. The foremost issue is that children who hate completing their homework are at an increased risk of achieving lower grades than those who do. Thus, it is imperative to identify the chief reasons that influence students' dislike for homework. Such factors are essential to developing measures that will reverse this alarming trend.
Firstly, the current education system has placed much emphasis on content rather than quality. Teachers focus more attention on completing the syllabus by assigning excessive homework, which means that children in the modern world have limited time for play and other leisure activities. Homework for the majority of students means that there will be no chance of seeing friends, visiting grandparents, dining out or arranging for a friend's sleepover. Thus, students will hate doing homework since it interferes with their social life. Further, most children prefer engaging in social and fun activities after school to spending too much time on homework.
Secondly, many parents have exerted unnecessary pressure on their children to achieve higher grades considering the inextricable link between academic performance and career development. Children often expect to unwind when they come home from school. On the contrary, grade-conscious parents will nag or even use coercive means to ensure that their children do not leave the house prior to completing the homework. There are cases where parents and children engage in regular fights over the issue of homework. The point of argument is that too much emphasis on completing homework without motivation pushes most students into losing interest in learning.
In addition, doing homework alone without inspiration from both teachers and parents will not help students to excel. The current school system will not generate perceptive students if it keeps on pushing children beyond their capabilities. The learning curve differs fundamentally among students and age groups. For instance, preschoolers require more time to play and to explore the world around them. Teachers and parents should encourage these children to develop social skills instead of exposing them to the pressure of completing homework. The unreasonable amount of homework assigned to the young learners will only increase their hate towards education as they grow up.
There is no doubt that parents and teachers in the contemporary society have placed a heavy burden on students to achieve higher grades. Pupils in the past could take multiple paths toward success, such as volunteering and civic engagement. Conversely, learners today have only the option of gaining higher grades in schools if they desire to become successful in the future. Overburdening students with homework only increases their anxiety to attain academic performance. Much as students should complete their homework to increase their learning competencies, they should participate in leisure activities to complement classroom learning.
