Although your example is quite personal, what you have stated about the communication barriers or miscommunication between the speakers of two different languages using a common language is quite true.
Recently, I had my lawyer talk to a person to settle a legal dispute. The person speaks a different regional language of Pakistan. The defendant speaks another language; my lawyer yet another language. They all used the common language of Pakistan: Urdu. It was quite painful to see the communication barriers the 3 of them (including me) faced in relaying meaning to each other. Although this can be really disturbing at times, this is also the beauty of the world which has so much cultural and linguistic diversity.
