Being "registered" in any particular country means absolutely nothing. Any foreign ripoff site (most commonly, those from Ukraine and Pakistan) can falsely claim to be based in the US after the fraudulent owner pays an online service to incorporate him for a few hundred bucks.

As safe of a bet as you can make is to choose a site that was registered in 2001 or earlier, as the landslide of fraudulent sites from Ukraine and Pakistan did not begin poisoning the market until 2002.

If you ask the companies, they will let you know. Usually, they mention it in their websites. We try to find the UK companies, being in Britain.

If a company claims it is a UK LTD company you can check if they're telling the truth through the 'Web Check' service on the Government-run website:

Hope this helps.

Carly, having a record at Companies House means absolutely nothing. As a US resident, it would take me a day or two to find/buy a PO box in London and incorporate through Companies House. Fraudulent, foreign companies do that all the time.

The problem is online company formations ... Nowadays, anybody can form a company in the UK as long as they've got about £30 to their name. All they need to do is create an account through one of those online formation agencies, pay the fee and, within 24 hours, receive their certificate of incorporation. People who've never been to the UK, have absolutely no ties there and can barely speak the language are, suddenly, the owners of UK limited companies. When you consider that they can get away with not paying taxes, but we can't, that they are not legally accountable for violating SoGA or the Consumer Protection Act (to name but two) but we are, etc ... it is really unfair. I really don't understand the government's attitude towards this ... why are they allowing it to go on?

As a US resident, it would take me a day or two to find/buy a PO box in London and incorporate through Companies House.

It's not even that difficult any more ... just go to any online formation agent, pay a bit more, and buy an address in London ... I think London addresses are going to £49.99 at the moment :)

Seriously ... is this either fair or right?

How to check the validity of writing websites.

My dear fellow. Before taking on the heavy burden of exposing scams in this industry (which would be commendable, were it not for your ulterior motives), I suggest that you first re-read and rewrite your web copy. Giving advice on writing services in your English is ironic....to say the least.

Registered Research CompanyJust because a company is seemingly registered as per online vetting, that does not mean that it is actually registered and is a reliable company.

It is easy to get a business registered electronically these days from any area of the world. Addresses are for sale, phone numbers are available, even a virtual office set up can be had for the right price.

The new ways of doing business has made it more difficult to spot a fake company. Specially online.

As with all things virtual, you have to simply take the word of the company for it and hope that they will deliver your paper and honor any agreements made. You can run a google check for the domain name and see what reviews and other company information turns up, Google Earth comes in handy when double checking the address and location, but may be a bit cumbersome for newbies to use.

So using the url investigating method works best. I have found companies that lead to playgrounds or vacant warehouses in the US using this method. It might work for you as well.

All of the above is accurate. Even if the company isn't an actual scam that takes your money and never provides any work for it, the fact that it's registered properly means absolutely nothing in terms of whether or not the work they do provide is actually any good. As I was just explaining to the latest client who contacted me tonight after choosing a cheaper provider a few weeks ago, at least once a month someone asks me for a price quote and then decides to go with someone cheaper, only to contact me again asking me to quote the exact same project, except for a much shorter deadline because the work that the cheaper provider furnished turned out to be so bad it was unusable to the client. When that happens, they usually end up paying me more than my original quote because of the shorter deadline in addition to the money they already wasted on the unusable projects they received from some company with a beautiful website that was "properly registered" as a business I rarely warn them in advance, because I never want anybody to feel that I'm pressuring him to use me or just trying to scare him away from using someone else, but, as I said, this happens at least once a month and those clients end up paying quite a lot just to get that project done properly. That's why my standard response anytime someone tells me he decided to go with some other provider is: "No problem and feel free to try me again anytime if you're not happy with the work you find cheaper."

Ive noticed from researching online writing companies is that a majority of them are registed in either Arizona or Panama. The sites registered in Panama will usually have their homepage stating "US Based". Ive attempted to find a site thats not based out of panama and came across one thta is based in Maryland. Anyone have any input if this is a credible way to loacate a legit writing service

Registration means little when dealing with unscrupulous companies. Many unethical companies (those who knowing provide crap by crap writers) are registered and even more operate so many sister companies that it's impossible to keep up with them all. The best route for students seeking help is to not wait until the last minute where you feel forced to go with whichever company offers the best rate. Instead, take a little time and research companies and make an informed decision on which company (or indie writer, for that matter) will be best for you in terms of both money and quality. However, if you're looking for a company that has no negative feedback, you'll never find one. All businesses receive negative feedback from time to time. So, I would see how each company responds/responded to complaints and go from there. Either way, this industry involves some risks on both sides.

I would also be wary of a company that promises the moon on large rush orders. Perfection is not possible in such cases; in fact, the larger the order and the shorter the deadline, the more likely you will encounter the need for revision. Keep that in mind as well and avoid deeming a good company bad because their writer (or an indie writer) work his/her butt off for you and make a few errors.

Overall, there's so many variables in finding the right company or writer for your project/projects. Research. Be informed.

@sarahconnors A simple Google search of IP lookup of the domain name can help you learn where the website is located. However, knowing where the server is located is not the same as having evidence that the company is truly a legitimate and registered US or UK based company. The most that the IP lookup will tell you is the location of the server. These days, nobody can trust the information that a company swears by online, nor should the student trust an IP lookup to represent the actual business location of the company. If you feel like the company may not be on the level, then trust your gut feeling and do not proceed with your transaction.

I hope that you are not just going to rely on the IP address lookup for the validity of your company choice. That is the worst way to do it by. I doubt that you have the time to check for the company business registration on your own either as that will cost you money to do accurately. Err on the side of caution, don't trust any company claims based on reviews or published location details.

Always assume that the company bought a foreign office address and is using a VOIP phone number as an office contact number. There is absolutely no way of confirming the actual address of a company. Even independent writers can claim to be at Point A when they are actually located at Point B. The way the internet is set up, it is just impossible to tell. Between the VPN's and the for sale office information, a student should just say a "Hail Mary!" when dealing with any writer or company. It all boils down to trust, honesty, and work quality. Don't base anything on the location of the company, whether confirmed or not.

The essay writing websites often get fraudulent registration papers. Some of them actually falsify public documents because they claim to be located in an office space that does exist, but for a completely different business. Even the ownership papers can be easily faked, as well as forwarding phone numbers. Addresses for hire these days are such a large business. Some companies are in the business of renting virtual office addresses and office spaces. Setting up your office space as you need it for meetings and phone conferences. Freelancers can also do the same thing. So it is no longer a matter of having a credible office location. It is a matter of having faith that the writer, or the company, can actually deliver what you need without a problem.
