Try jazz or slow instrumental.

Any music with lyrics or a beat distracts me and I don't listen to classical; so no music. I can't read and absorb information without relative silence, but once I'm actually writing (as opposed to researching/reading), I usually have talk radio or the TV on unless I'm working on something particularly difficult.

The Attitudes of Students towards Writing Assignments and Homework

It is a norm to learn new ideas each day. On the other hand, it is different venture to request an individual to explore more concerning a given topic. Most individuals learn new ideas at church but given verses to read further at home have always been a huge task. Homework for students is not an exception. Most students are willing to learn in class but loathe homework. Thus, there are key reasons that contribute to the hatred for homework.

Music Homework AttitudeFirstly, in most instances, home assignments have no options. Students are forced to carry out research in areas that may not be of their interest. The students in most cases are willing to learn the most important issues that affect their lives. While doing homework, there are penalties that can be implicated upon student if they fail to submit. This makes the situation even worse as most students would like to learn areas of their interest.

Secondly, most of the home assignments are currently graded. This is not a motivational factor for most students. Students have been graded currently from some of their assignments. Thus, the assignments have shifted focus from learning new ideas to the concept of grade optimization. Students do not learn new ideas for individual experiences but for the sake of attaining a good grade. There are numerous cases of students giving out assignments to be done for them so that they can achieve the best results. This is a clear indication that assignments are more grades oriented when compared to the end result, which should be a learning experience. Students have to go an extra mile of cheating to receive the best result for homework which is not conducive for a learning experience.

Thirdly, home assignments have ruined the good old fun time. In the past, home assignments were given to students to gauge their understanding of a concept. The weirdest issue is that, currently most of the homework given entails new areas to be researched on and this ruins the difference of fun time while doing assignments while at home. Students prefer doing assignments in areas that they have learnt for more practice which is currently viewed in a different perspective. It is imperative to note that, homework currently gives most students chills due to the heavy workload and the never ending research conducted by students. Due to the pressure that most of the tutors and lecturers stress on homework, students have turned to sorting out for services that can enhance their performance in the research field.

Learning and homework have always been compared by most students. For learning, it is like serving the sweetest dish that an individual enjoys eating wholly. Serving a dish that is enjoyable ensures that a plate is cleaned up. Serving a dish that an individual has been forced with can be compared to homework. For such a meal, an individual is forced to take in what is given and at the end expected to clear the plate. It is not a good practice as most students enjoy most what they like and will always do homework half hearted. It therefore means that, the students are not geared towards learning but are involved in an environment full of competition and grading. It is due to uncertainties that come with homework that most students have never appreciated homework.

In summary, homework does not encourage learning but research work. Most students would like to practice what they learnt in class to perfect their skills other than trying to gain new knowledge if the prior concepts taught in class were not well understood. Students will continue disliking home assignments as long as there is no learning experience.

I'm mostly listening to Jeffrey Thompson hour-long delta sleep (or other ones) songs. They are like meditative, slow, ambient noises that dont distract me from writing an essay. I recommend listening to both parts of his delta sleep composition and dolphin touch.

The only time I really listen to music these days is while I'm driving; and my car Sirius/XM is permanently set to the Grateful Dead Channel (#23).

No music. No nothing. Go away. I'm writing. It ain't easy. Let me edit that please. I did tell my 4-year-old daughter that she could interrupt me whenever she wanted because she is far more important than anything I was doing. That worked out well...

I found that I function best as an academic writer when I surrounded by music while working. It gots my creative juices flowing in a way that silence and focused concentration never could. Some of you may even find it strange to find out that I prefer (to this day) to listen to Latin music when I used to find myself dealing with mental block. Particularly, the music of a singer called Thalia. Her danceable Latin beats really inspired me to keep hitting those keys, reading the seemingly endless journals, and looking for additional academic information. Somehow, listening to a language other than English while working is what sometimes got my creative juices flowing.

During most instances though, I often went through my playlist of eclectic music sources such as an extensive 80's and 90's music collection, along with Selena Gomez, Kylie Minogue, Steps, Il Divo, and Taylor Swift, to name but a few from my collection of music to work by. The common denominator among my music choices at the time was that the music had to give me a concert like atmosphere while I work. I have been known to listen to audio versions of full concerts while working because of this requirement. The natural high that comes from musical enjoyment blasting loudly on speakers or beating away through my headset always placed me in a state of writing perfection that allowed me to churn out a paper that was definitely a masterpiece often well appreciated by the client. My musically inspired writing always resulted in repeated business dealings with that student at the time.

I can't listen to a song I know or understand while working. I'll end up focusing on the song rather than working. Most times I don't listen to anything while working. Sometimes I'll listen to songs in other languages or songs without lyrics.

I'm often curious about how people listen to music they like while working. Isn't it a distraction? Doesn't it slow them down?

I think I experience mental block from time to time. When I listen to music to unblock this, I'll make sure to do this before working otherwise it'll just be a distraction.

The human brain works in different ways for different people. Some people function well in a noisy environment, some prefer a quiet and the solitude of an almost noise proof room. I do not consider having music as I work a distraction because I fall asleep when my environment becomes too silent. That is why I need upbeat music to work by. It helps keep my senses awake and makes me more receptive to the information I am reading or increases my perception of certain data I need to analyze. It just works for me somehow. Then again, I grew up in the multi-tasking generation so I don't find it strange to be using my tablet, my laptop, listening to music on my speakers, while watching the news on television. All of that is going on while I drafted a client paper or finalized the content of a paper for submission. My parents never could understand how I turned in exemplary grades while I a student because I studied to the same organized chaos in my room. I had a friend who could not study unless he was watching a basketball game on television, and another friend who absolutely had to be eating all the while she was studying. Otherwise, they just couldn't get the work done. Whatever works and produces good results can't be questioned though. What may not work for you, works for me, and we most likely produce the same results. It's an enigma.

Honestly, I also like some noise but as soon as I understand the things going on in the environment I get distracted. So, I always have the noise in a language I cannot understand, or just have a silent environment.

I am probably one of the very few people who get distracted if music is playing while I am writing. Other than writing, I feel good listening to some local and/or exotic tunes. I think it's about environmental conditioning, plus your natural style, plus your preferences that work together for such a choosing.

It's good to see you guys reviving old threads to add some meaning to this forum. I never knew this thread even existed. Keep up the good work. The forum has evolved over the years and is getting better and better, "something I like...."

When I work on something dull I play this one (works wonders for concentration and focus)

When I work on something interesting, I listen to jazz or something like this

I may be a bit different from the other writers here. I find that I am able to focus more on my writing when I tune into YouTube and put on a full length action movie to listen to, yup, listen to not watch, while I work. The people who drop in on me while I am writing, with my Ultra High Definition home theater system blaring at the highest possible volume, ask me how I can work while it sounds like World War 3 is erupting around me, I just laugh at them and tell them the explosions help me concentrate on my work. I listen to music after I complete the paper as a form of winding down and relaxing. As long as I need to be alert and focused though, I need the noise that comes from action flicks to keep me alert.

Personally I, when I do any work, always listen to music. It helps me concentrate on the task. I know that sounds quite strange.

Does not necessarily have to be full-blown music. However, putting on focus-oriented beats and/or working in an environment with muffled noise (libraries, cafes) always helps!

While some people work better with music in the background, or watching movies, I find that I work better if I read an online paper while working on writing tasks. The break helps my brain declog while completing the assignment. I find it relaxes me as I write papers and also, while I chill between papers. Sometimes, I even come across information that I can use in the completion of the next paper. It often works out that way for me. I get to relax and research at the same time. Something that music appreciation while writing would not allow me to do.
