My impression is that Writecheck is free and not complete, but anyone can use it; Turnitin has a lot more papers stored in it, and you need to be a professor to log in.

The answer is here: en.writecheck.com/faq/. WriteCheck is designed for students and shows potential plagiarism score while TurnItIn is for instructors and shows the actual plagiarism matching sources. Both share the same database of documents.

No, Major, that is wrong. Turnitin.com is a much more extensive database. I have seen it catch material that made it through Writecheck.

Check WritingAside from the name of the companies being different, there is very little that differentiates these two companies.

Writecheck and Turnitin both use a database of existing essays, to which the current student's essay is added, for future reference.

So if a student makes any revisions to an essay that he previously submitted for checking, it will somehow manage to turn up as flagged for plagiarism in the system of both checkers.

This reminds me of the discussion that was recently posted here about students surrendering their rights to their essays to the software company in exchange for "free" plagiarism checking.

That discussion can be found here : https://essayscam.org/forum/gt/grammarly-review-user-content-ownership-licensing-6266/

There is no assurance that a student's essay will not turn up as plagiarized once a first submission is made to either website since both sites store the information in their system.

These sites are basically a different sort of mining tool for the company owners so there isn't much that it can actually do in terms of proper plagiarism checking.

Exactly, and the same applies to all other "checkers." I'll also add that many universities use WriteCheck AND Turnitin where your submitted paper is assessed by both. A few use only Turnitin and students are encouraged to use WriteCheck on their own before turning in their assignment. Either way, @WriteReview is correct -- once the paper is submitted to either or both (like other programs), it is likely in the respective system and subsequent checks will flag it as plagiarized.

In addition to that, the student also gives up certain personal information to the owners of both sites in order to use the "Free" service. Nothing is ever for free on the internet. Your personal data will always be the payment required. So the companies not only own the rights to the essays submitted to them, but they also own the personal data of the students who unwittingly give up the information. Mostly because the professors, lazy slobs who no longer want to do the work the universities hired them to do, force them to submit the essays to these companies. The student scores are no longer based on content, it is based on the plagiarism rating instead.

Okay. Writecheck by Turnitin was shut down officially in 2020. However, WriteCheck.org which is an AI trained by teachers to help students become better writers is what now uses that name. So the service provided has changed. It is no longer a plagiarism checking tool. It is now an AI powered writing editor for students. So let's not get confused by the name. The plagiarism checker is dead.
The opinions are that of the author's alone based on an individual capacity. Opinions are provided "as is" and are not error-free.
