I too hope to find a good writer or a good company. I've found that asking for free samples of their work or placing order for 1-2 pages will give you an idea of the quality.

I had one excellent and one appalling experiences with them so I'm unsure.

That is appalling. I've had awful experiences with various companies but at least I was always assigned a writer!
