Dear Madam/Sir,
I wish to express my interest in the EMJMD Euro-culture: Society, Politics and Culture in a Global Context program. I believe that have what it takes to participate in this program given that I hold a Bachelor Degree in Foreign Languages and Literary Studies. Other than majoring in German and Portuguese, I also took up courses that touched on Economics and Business Management, Political and Economic Geography and Intercultural Pedagogy with special interests that inclined toward intercultural relations.
While studying for my bachelor degree I worked as a sales person in a mobile phone store. Although this job was not in line with my studies it is an experience that I am truly grateful for as it granted me means to self-sustenance during studies besides giving the acumen for constructive teamwork. I resigned from the mobile phone store after three years and traveled to Brussels where I developed interest the European Union's policy-making mechanism, its importance, socio-political functions and impact on ordinary global affairs.
My time in Brussels exposed me to multiculturalism as I also; I met students and thanks from different cultural backgrounds. It was during this time that I learnt about the significance of freedom of movement that is granted by the European Union soci0-economi framework. It was at this time that U.K. formulated the BREXIT plan to leave the E.U. - an event that gave me a better understanding of what of it means when a society speaks with a united voice in the bid to attain their socio-economic dreams.
Thus, I came to the conclusion that this was the time to work toward a united Europe. What I want to suggest is that open minded and tolerant global citizens need to advocate for a globalization concept that includes everyone to achieve a cultural outlook that transcends beyond borders and this does not have to be done purely on a political-basis but on civilized ground as well. A democratic culture has to be promoted and it is necessary by breeding a crop of politicians who can look beyond national interests.
Moreover, as an immigrant, who grew up in a mix of Muslim and the Western cultures and therefore, I appreciate the benefits of social and religious cohesion giving rise to my interest in Euro-culture studies. I wish to note that I took up a voluntary job as an English tutor as the Bologna Prison Campus upon my return from Brussels to have an idea of what it feels like to work in challenging environment with an aim of enriching my work experience.
In the interim I realized that I could do more to help people in need. Therefore, while traveling around Europe I decided to join the NGO Serve the City Brussels working in a temporary centre that provides food, shelter and welcomes approximately four hundred refugees.
In my opinion, in this era our values are going to be forged by the way we behave towards people who seek our help because this is not merely about the rescue of their lives anymore but in this century, I think it is about the rescue of our values.
I find that more movement and participation have to be fostered because altruism and empathy are two important foundations of civilization and I am therefore confident that this Master will help me become a better world citizen.
