Abstract
The following paper investigates the best practices for writing a dissertation. First of all, the characteristics of a great dissertation are also described. It takes a chapter-wise approach to give the guidelines related to writing a great dissertation.
A great dissertation is the one that paves way for further research. Another characteristic of a great dissertation is that it solves a major problem related to a field. A dissertation is considered to be great if it introduces a new topic. To wind up, a great dissertation has impact on the way things are done in a certain field. (Narasimhan, 2006)
Beginning
To begin with, sufficient amount of research is needed for a dissertation. A great dissertation, as mentioned earlier, must illuminate the topic so well that new research possibilities are created. Therefore, extensive research is required in order to ensure the illumination of the people belonging to the field. Care must be exercised in selecting the sources to include as the credibility of the sources also matter when it comes to the evaluation of the dissertation. Peer reviewed journals, papers appearing in conferences, published reports and academic documents make a trove of sources that can be used during writing. Following the research, an appealing title should be assigned to the dissertation. (Narasimhan, 2006)
Abstract
The next step is the abstract of the dissertation. The abstract of a dissertation introduces the dissertation itself to the reader. Therefore, it must be meticulously designed. The first and second paragraph bring the reader's attention to the problem and its arduousness. The third paragraph portrays your approach towards solving the problem. The last paragraph summarizes the results of your endeavor insinuating that your hard work has brought the desirable results. (Narasimhan, 2006)
Acknowledgement
Following the abstract, a chapter containing the related work that you used should be included. In this chapter, the writer must mention the sources he included and the impact they had on the dissertation. The key to becoming successful in scribing this chapter is to use encouraging and extolling comments generously. Every contributor must be given the credit he deserves. (Narasimhan, 2006)
Introduction
This chapter begins with the introduction of the problem. The introduction should be similar to a story. It should comment about the origination of the problem and explain its journey until now. It must also focus on the hypothesis. The hypothesis should be supported using a lot of facts and examples. The writer should give preference to recent examples so as to remove any doubts of obsolescence. The introduction must also consists of all the acronyms and abbreviations that will be used throughout the dissertation. The introduction should be contrived in a way that it arouses the reader to go on. (Narasimhan, 2006)
The Main Part
This part consists of several chapters discussing the problem, its effects and solutions. The chapters pertain to different aspects of the main problem. Each chapter must have a different result. These chapters are also like a sequence in which the previous one triggers the next one until virtually all the aspects related to the problem are covered. In order to write an outstanding main part, one should include as many figures as possible. Absurdity should be avoided or else the quality of the dissertation will be demeaned. The data and facts included in the dissertation must be presented in a clear way. Clarity in this part will lead to the success of the dissertation as this is the most prominent part of the dissertation. (Narasimhan, 2006)
The methodology also belongs to this part. Therefore, one should be clear about the chosen methodology and the reasons behind the choice. The rejected options must also be mentioned and the undesired results should also be mentioned. (Narasimhan, 2006)
Conclusion
In this part, the future possibilities for research should be mentioned. This should not necessarily be considered as the shortcomings of your dissertation but should be considered as an achievement as new research is made possible. The conclusion should also the work done in the entire dissertation. It must also comment on whether the problem was solved or not. The progress made should also be stated. (Narasimhan, 2006)
