Working in a team on a dissertation or PhD thesis - is it possible?

Is it possible for writers to work in a team on a large project (like a dissertation or PhD thesis)? Have any of you done that? If so, how have been compensated?

It's possible, but not practical (if you work in chapters then it might be feasible).

Not in the sense that you're probably imagining, but I've had one of the writers whose work I know and trust handle sections on financial or statistical material for me or provide graphics that are beyond my capabilities. Otherwise, whenever I get a major project like that, I just write it all myself.

.... and then you pay him/her the rate agreed upon, correct? What if this <outsourced> part needs to be revised; who handles the revision?

The other writer gets whatever I was paid per page. He's responsible (to me) for any revisions if the revision request is justified. That means I've asked the other writer to fix anything for which I'd have been responsible to fix for the client. Revisions that are my fault because I (or we) missed something in the original order specs are always free. Revisions based on after-the-fact specifications or additional details that were never in the original specs (or on subjective editorial criticism) are not free. To anticipate your next question: Yes, I'd refund the customer for that section if the other writer ever refused to do a justified rewrite for me; and no, it's never happened because the 2 or 3 other good writers I know are trustworthy and would never leave me stuck in the middle like that by refusing to fix their mistakes and they've also been doing this long enough to know when a revision request is justified.

There is no team in I. And this is a fully, wholly, entirely an I business. Team work - in the traditional sense - does not exist. Well, maybe it does for the admin departments of large essay firms, but writers rarely, if ever can, or will work in pairs. It makes it so much harder to write something cogent if the other guy or a gal isn't up to the specs.

Team work - in the traditional sense

What is the traditional sense? You don't believe in being 'stronger together'? In theory, two freelance writers could be stronger together than a single freelance writer to compose an excellent dissertation.

In theory! Go ahead and try it; do let me know how it went :D

Team work: busy little bees sitting in an office drinking shoddy coffee and debating the next steps to ensure the company doesn't go under.....The boss gives the stern look of dissaproval whenever someone says something stupid. When he's not busy doing that, plays minesweeper on his PC or stares at the wall......

With the advent of online text editing tools and cloud storage, working as a team on a dissertation of PhD thesis has become possible. This is now a reality for both students and writers. Having the ability to edit while on video conference calls has also created the scenario wherein the paper is now more smoothly written and transitioned from assigned writer to assigned writer. It is just a question of whether the student or writer has the technical know-how to make these existing apps work for their benefit. My writers have successfully used these instruments for cloud writing with much success. Oftentimes working with the students directly either via Google Drive or MS OneDrive.

For me, it would all depend upon the topic that the team has chosen to present. Most people prefer to work alone when it comes to their dissertation or PhD thesis. It is simpler for them to work that way because everything gets done on time. Working with a team means having to balance different free times to work on your dissertation so it would be better if they just worked on it individually. However, having a research team ready to help you would be appreciated. Remember that serious professors have writing and research teams at their beck and call. Making sure that their team works on the same page. So what I am trying to say is, if the professor can do it, so will you.
The opinions are that of the author's alone based on an individual capacity. Opinions are provided "as is" and are not error-free.

The same goes for writers hired to write dissertations. Collaborating with other writers only adds unnecessary complication, unless it's unavoidable and necessary for an isolated element of a project (such as statistical analysis or advanced graphics).
