Students file $900,000 lawsuit against Turnitin.com for copyright infringement

I give the kids a lot of credit! Good for them. It's about time somebody stood up to those Turnitin thieves.

I doubt they will get $900,000, but it's good news for students. They should not be forced to submit their copyrighted papers to a semi-commercial database in exchange for violating their copyrights. Smells like pre-crime conviction :

The lawsuit, filed this week in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, seeks $900,000 in damages from the for-profit service known as Turnitin. Since Turnit in decided to settle with the students that sued them, it would appear that we have an indirect admission of guilt on the part of the company. This was perhaps the best solution their legal department could come up with that would silence the detractors and keep the company in business, without having to change its business focus. Which probably explains why i Paradigm decided to partner up with schools instead of just going solo as they did at first.

Turnitin has, in my opinion, made educators lazy and reliant on A.I., a technology that cannot replace the human element when assessing the originality of paper content. This company has just provided schools and universities with new revenue streams. These are additional expenses that provedelumental to students who have no choice but to pay for the services. This international company represents a legitimate scam meant to further enr ich schools that collude with the company. They deserve to be sued internationally, just like the other Big Tech companies.

The existence of Turnitin (and other online plagiarism scanners) is the main reason that some of us have been able to earn a decent living doing this work full time instead of working traditional jobs. Before 2007, when Turnitin showed up, many students only purchased pre-written projects. Plagiarism scanners destroyed their value by making original custom-written projects a necessity throughout this industry.
