How many words should one page include?

standard assumption that students will use 12 point Arial or Times New Roman with double line spacing

That is correct. However, what is dirty about PrescottPapers' claim is that "Times New Roman[,] 12[-]point font" (with default margins in MS Word) results in approximately 300 words per page. "Courier New, 12-point font" (which is a huge, non-academic font) results in approximately 250 words per page. Fraudulent and/or deceptive sites/companies use Courier New because it enables them to falsely claim -- and mislead potential customers into believing -- that their price per "page" is better/cheaper than the old, established companies (or any other service provider that actually uses Times New Roman).

Although using deceptive tactics such as larger fonts is just wrong, the words-per-page issue is a little more complicated. I've counted the words on several pages from some of my recent assignments and they average 278, and this doesn't include pages with lists or figures. In some cases, a "10-page paper" comes out to 12 pages (or more) by the time I satisfy the word count. This isn't a problem, especially, but I question the 300-word minimum per page guarantee. I doubt that I use more longer words instead of a slew of short ones compared to other writers, and I've always felt that 250-275 words per page was a more reasonable guarantee. Any other writers have an average words per page to report?

Good question. A standard one page should be 275 words to 300 words.

According to a thoughtful article in Word Counter Blog (wordcounter net /blog/2015/09/18/10655_how-many-pages-is-2000-words.html):

"For those who need a general rule of thumb, a typical page which has 1-inch margins and is typed in 12 point font with standard spacing elements will be approximately 500 words when typed single spaced. For assignments that require double spacing, it would take approximately 250 words to fill the page."

The article goes on to note that because of the large variation in the number of words per page due to different word usage patterns (i.e., longer words take up more space and shorter words increase the word count), many papers are assigned by word count instead of a set number of pages.

Apparently, the people at Word Counter Blog don't have a clue. What font are they using? Geneva?

It's good to keep your font size 12, font type Arial / Times new roman, and 350 words per page.
Break your text into short paras to keep the readers engaged.

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but when I bought a new Dell around 2002 (can't remember exactly but it was three computers ago), the line spacing was set to "At Least" (I don't know if this option is still available) and I assumed it was double spacing (it looked close) and I never bothered to change it until 6 months later when I discovered my error. I had been providing about 350-400 words per page all that time and what was particularly galling was the essay service I was working for then (no longer in business) never told me and I later learned they changed my TNR to Courier, increasing their page count even further. The moral: "At Least" is not double spaced.

The ideal word count per page should be in the range of 250 - 350 per page and not more or less than that.

Words on PageIt depends upon how long each sentence is, how many sentences are in the paragraphs, and how short or long the words used in the essay are.

It is also the preference of the writer (in the case of the independent writer) or the requirement of the academic writing company (normally 300 words per page).

Sometimes, 400 words can be squeezed in there.

Personally though, I try not to write more than 250 words in order to leave some space for possible revisions to the essay.

It is also best to not write more than the required minimum word count as per the provided instructions because you don't get paid extra for additional words beyond the minimum indicated.

Unless of course, one is paid per word, in which case, the writer should keep going for as long as the single page holds out. There are no hard and fast rules about the number of words on a page unless actually indicated. That is something that is discretionary on the part of the writer or the part of the company.

I usually have about 300-350 words in a page when I use Times New Roman font 12 and double space. Honestly, I just take it as 1 page=300 words when it comes to charging. So for me, a 12 page paper with 3000 words would be charged the same as a 10 page paper with 3000 words, all other issues remaining constant. Sometimes, 3000 words will barely fill 9 pages. Other times it's 12 pages.

300-360 words per page sounds just about right when the writer considers the formatting requirements of the student. I have had students request that 400 words be fitted onto a single page in some instances. It all depends upon their budget I guess. The smaller the font, the more words a writer can squeeze in. While client word requirements can be accommodated upon request, I normally tell my writers to write no more than 250-300 words per page. By the way, the word count per page will also vary depending upon the length of words used. The number of characters for each word has a bearing on the number of words that a page can accommodate. So there really are several factors, other than the company policy and student word count per page request that will dictate the actual number of words that can be typed onto a page.

300 words per page is the standard maximum in this industry, with an average of about 285. Clients can always order single-spacing or a smaller font (or anything else that increases the number of words per page), but if they do that, they're going to pay by word count instead of by the page. No company or writer I know allows clients to "specify" or "format" their way into doubling the amount of writing they're going to get for a specific number of paid pages.

The number of words also depends upon what size paper the client wants the writer to use. An A4 sized paper will not hold the same number of words as a letter sized paper. The writer will have to definitely write more words if the legal paper format is what the client opts to use. It isn't just about the font size requirement. It is also about the kind of paper to be used and what the topic to be written about is. A scholarship statement could use only 200-300 characters, a statement response could be only 150 words, but the client still has to pay for the full page. So, there are several writing considerations, based on the type of paper to be written, that could dictate less number of words for the page content.

The FAQs and/or TOS of most essay companies (and freelance writers) explain how many words customers should expect per ordered "page." That makes it the customer's responsibility to order the right number of pages required for any project. They can request that projects be formatted any way they want (single spacing, 500 words per page using a smaller font than the 12 pt. standard, etc.), but they still have to pay for however many words they want according to whatever the TOS of the company or writer defines as a paid "page."

Based upon my experience, the number of words per page varies greatly depending upon several factors. These include the font type, the font size, the line spacing, and paragraph requirement per page. A standard page can house a maximum of 300 words if done in Times New Roman, font size 12, double spaced, with a maximum of 5 paragraphs for the page. It is not a rule set in stone though. It is all based upon the format requirement of the student. Just remember, no professor will allow less than font size 10 for the text so trying to keep the size small to avoid paying for more pages could be a problem for the student.

I've noticed that professional writers have a completely different set of rules when it's for a paycheck. I can easily fit 400 words on a page when I'm writing my own essays-it's not hard to adjust the formatting to make it work. But when I was hiring writers, it felt like they were doing everything possible to stretch 250 words across a whole page. I finally figured out it was just a policy to make more money. Whenever I requested 300 words a page, they'd tell me it wasn't possible and try to hit me with an extra fee. It's so frustrating because I know exactly how much space a paragraph actually takes up.
