It's one thing you know that the company has some ESL writers (against its claims)

So you plan to sue all (I mean all) US-based companies? Name one US-based company that has never worked with a non-native speaker. If the writing level (as judged by the company) is native-equivalent then most (if not all) companies won't refuse to contract with such a writer.

[Moved from]: How to find a legitimate writing service (in points)

Found on Essay Directory: essaydirectory.com/legitimate-or-not/

Is it a complete and accurate list?

The scammer has now changed his email to: hsqessays@gmail.

Further research shows the fraud cooperates with 'Sebastian W.' (who may be in fact the scammer himself).

He uses a trick common among international criminals -- he created a spam web page on a strong .edu domain from which he unlawfully promotes his scam website at: people.ucsc.edu.

She did not respond to our email nor did she complete any of those pending orders.

As far as I can tell, all legitimate US-based companies (they also work with independent freelance writers only) would do the same. If writer fails to complete a project on time (or client cannot accept the project for some reason, eg. completed project is plagiarized or irrelevant), the project is made available to other writers who may or may not take it (if they decide to take it and the deadline is near they usually charge more). If project is not taken or client doesn't work to work with the company any more, a refund is issued to the client.

However, as someone who is busting* their ass trying to become a better writer, and provide a service

How knowing this: "do many legitimate writing companies employ a seniority based system with regards to what orders are accessible by their writers" would make you a better writer?

The concept is quite foreign to my logic. I would understand if you were asking about different strategies to write, the best sources for finding information, the most productive time of the day based on other writers' experience, etc.

Can you explain? And - most importantly - have you contacted the companies to find out? I'd also be interested to know the true answers to those questions.

In my opinion, 'first time first serve' is as fair as it gets. If WriterA is willing to get up in the morning to take an available project and WriterB prefers to sleep till noon, then WriterA should be rewarded more. You claim it that is unfair?

Hm, good find.

The students who are unwittingly uploading them via viper?

In general, nothing is free. If you use a 'free anti-plagiarism tool' there is always a fine print. I wouldn't be surprised that their system actually stores essays and puts them up for sale after X months/years from the submission time..

General Talk / Using paper as guide [65]

Thus, U.S. companies/writers are much more likely to be forced to give out information about clients than offshore companies/writers.

Same applies to any country, for example:

UK companies/writers are much more likely to be forced to give out information about clients than offshore companies/writers.

Australian companies/writers are much more likely to be forced to give out information about clients than offshore companies/writers.

etc.

Okaay. So why did you bold the part about some offshore writer? What was your point?

Oh wait, are you trying to argue that legitimate companies in the U.S. can effectively protect the students who misuse the products purchased from them?

I guess companies or freelance writers shouldn't be responsible for students who misuse the products. If you buy a knife and kill somebody, would the victim's family go after the knife manufacturer?

It's just hard to get your questions and points...

General Talk / Using paper as guide [65]

Are you really willing to argue that courts in the U.S. are just as capable of compelling term paper companies physically located in the U.S. to give information about purchased essays as such courts would be in compelling some offshore writer in some Third World country to do so? :p

Well, I didn't want you to disclose your location..

Anyway ; ). If a company is located overseas then the US courts wouldn't be capable of compeling them to give information, either.

a court of law can compel a company in the U.S. to reveal the essays

They can compel an individual freelance writer like yourself, too.

Just like companies, freelance writers keep copies of the essays and they also keep financial information of their clients (if not directly the information is logged and readily available through Paypal or other payment systems).

most employers hold money back because of greedy anxiety.

It is safe to assume that 'most employers are greedy.' But if they weren't 'greedy' they wouldn't bother to run companies and put bread on the table of thousands of workers and their families.

We've been asking you for months to start up your own company and show your generosity, but you refused. Besides lip service, you did absolutely nothing to improve the lives of others. In the meantime, the 'greedy employers' paid hundreds of thousands to their contracted writers and put a smile on their families' faces.

Writers shouldn't receive payment until they've submitted the work.

Right, but it's much more convenient for a company to withhold some funds rather than going through an inexpensive (BUT lengthy) legal process. Another option is to pay by Paypal or similar types of online payment processing accounts which protect the company from possible future problems.

How much money you will need?

All you need is a free email account and a free Paypal account; no financial investment is required. You may post your email and qualifications on EssayChat or similar websites.

If you want to get even more serious, a basic website (About Me / Services / Faq / Contact) may cost $100-$300.

You may also want to start working with a sub-contractor to revise/edit your papers.

So what are your ideas so far? How do you hope to make it work? What are the most important things to succeed? What things can be done better?

Having been in the online business for several years you could write a thesis about it even without knowing all the details.

I don't buy it. You don't even have a website yet and you are already worried about 'sufficient numbers'?

Why do you need to know it?

1. treat your writers with respect.

For ex

2. concentrate on building word-of-mouth advertising.

How?

It may be better to either focus on editing/proofreading or custom writing. In both areas the competition is strong (mostly because of the misleading/fraudulent sites that use all available marketing tricks and gimmicks without legal liability).

Running adsense - I guess it's hard to compete with scammers and content scrapers these days, too.

of my Excel data typically had very apparent pricing schemes

What do you mean by that?

The only full-time employees may be the owner/s. All others are outsourced contractors or sales people (but it also depends on the business mode). Of course, fraudulent sites may claim they have 'directors, mangers' etc. (especially in their 'press releases'), but in fact all the claims are only creative imagination of their outsourced PR/keyword freelance writers.

Pricing metrics (# of words, time 'til completion)

Visit some sites to get the answer. Obviously, the more words you need, the more it will cost. Same about the completion time.

Does pricing vary with discipline?

There are less contract writers who specialize in physics than the ones who specialize in English Literature, so in most cases 'Yes.'

Are the web firms simply middle-men who link students with free-lancers?

The simple answer is 'Yes.'

Do they advertise for employees?

No. All websites I know (and I know hundreds of them; I think WritersBeware is the only one who knows more :) advertise for freelance/independent contract writers. Those that use the word 'employee' (happens very sporadically) also mean 'freelance/independent contract writers' but their problem is they are foreign-based companies that don't understand English/legal nuances well enough to write a meaningful ad.

What distinguishes one firm from another?

Read this forum and you'll see the difference. In general, some companies abide the American/British laws (because they are based in the US/UK) and others pretend to be 'American/British' companies, lie about their location and qualifications, and they think the relevant laws don't apply to them.

wondering what to tell her))

I would tell her she should be grateful she got the job in the first place.

But at the same time her problem was that she has failed to learn anything useful from your model essays. It's probably her own fault.

That could be a reason why they (illegally) advertise they do 'online classes.' ... and giving the legitimate services bad press.

I can see how you are threatened by some of my ideas.

No, your ideas threaten THOUSANDS of people who work online as independent freelance writers.

tit for tat

Don't make me laugh..

Anyway, your reply and avoidance of answering the relevant questions just reaffirms my position about who you are and what your agenda is.

------------

My only suggestion for professional freelance writers and editors who read this thread -- please invite your colleagues into this discussion so that they could express their opinion about their expected (ie. worsened) standards of living and (lack of) professional opportunities once the ideas of the tools like editor75 are implemented.

this is the status quo. it shouldn't be this way.

In other words, your goal is to kill the freelance writing business.

Just say it and don't play games with us.

Currently people on the job market have two options:

A. Work as an employee in a brick and mortar job and be fully controlled by their employer.

B. Work as a freelancer (like all current freelance writers do) and have all the freedom and opportunities they can get.

Those who want to have: paid sick days, vacations, health insurance, bonuses (what company gives bonuses these days anyway) choose option A (and are your friends)!

Those who value freedom of work and the opportunity of being their own boss choose option B!

-------------

Whatever you propose already exists and it's up to the individual if they want it or not!

But you want to remove option B and make all workers be controlled slaves of their employers and the system. Slaves who have a few sickdays and some carrots ('bonuses.').

-------------

The real question is WHY are you here (and possibly on other forums for writers) trying to bring your agenda to kill the freelance writing business? I think Roger's post who suggested you are an IRS worker makes perfect sense. Hey, you are also working as an independent contractor, no? :-)

No freelance writing business = More collected taxes = More bonuses for YOU

This is the answer to all of your questions.

as others have said before, and I now realize, an hourly rate wouldn't work in this industry. it would be too complicated to figure out a standard page rate, because of the relative complexity of different orders.

It took you only 473 posts, but better late than never.

therefore, CPP increases should be based on a formula that reduces the % taken by the company from the customer, reduces the amt spent by the company on advertising, and proportionately redistributes this to:

It confirms yet again you have never worked in the private industry. Why are you so concerned about the company's earnings? If the company doesn't make money then it has no motivation to be on the market. That means freelancers have less job opportunities.

Is it your other goal - to send all online freelance writers on welfare?

increase the CPP

The market / competition decide the CPP. In some cases the writer decides about their own CPP (if they are allowed to name their own price).

create a pool for a limited number of paid sick days ($100/day or so)

Some freelancers do 12 pages a YEAR (or less) for a company they have an account with. That equals to 1 page a month. In your limited world, all writers would have to do is to set up accounts with several companies, write 1 page a month, and get paid X days*$100? Assuming X=20days/year, writers would get $2,000 a year just from one company doing nothing?

But that's just the beginning. Creative writers could easily set up accounts with 50 companies. That equals 50*$2,000 ('sick days') = 100K a year for nothing. Maybe such system is working great in the public sector (what's the US deficit again?), but not for us who are in the private sector.

expand or create incentives/rewards programs

If someone chooses to work as an independent freelance writer their biggest reward is getting projects. Those who want extra incentives and bonuses get a brick and mortar job where they are constantly watched and controlled by their employer. Why is it so hard for you to understand?
