Writing Careers / 4writers don't work for them!!! [54]

I still don't understand why most of you focus on "low pay rates." Writing online is a freelance writing / contracting job - that means, you either agree to the terms and work for the agreed amount or you move on and look for a better rate. Those of you who live in a modern country will not work for $1 a page, but there are some "writers" who will still consider such a low rate because for them the rate is not that bad. The quality of the paper will obviously be poor, but if a client likes it then so be it.

Complaining about low rates is like complaining about extremely high rates. If we discussed cars and someone posted a link to a car that costs 1M then most of us would agree that the manufactures selling these cars for 1M are: thieves, ripoff artists, scammers, etc. The same negative reaction without an adequate reason.

It's not a crime to offer $.75 per page. If a writer doesn't like the rate, he/she just moves on. $.75-$1 per page are being offered daily on established sites like elance or freelancer and nobody seems to see a problem with that. I'm also "outraged" that people in rural Kenya can buy raw milk for $.20 per gallon while here I have to pay $5 per gallon. $0.75 per page will attract below-average writers, but such companies are no competition to established companies either.

How do you explain essayrelief and its 555 related sites from Karachi, Pakistan having been quite expensively designed and promoted for the sole purpose of engaging in 100% copy-and-paste plagiarism?

I don't think allegedly plagiarized papers had anything to do with the lawsuit. Besides, a plagiarized paper can easily be chargebacked so in that case there's no financial loss to the client and there is double loss (cost of advertising + cost of chargeback) for the company.

Qualified, American writers with self-respect and the need to live above the poverty line do not write for any of the foreign ripoff companies.

In the age of the Internet, freelance writers don't really care who pays them (as long as they pay them) or if a company they contract with is foreign or not. There's a legitimate reason why Paypal, for example, works in about 200 countries worldwide. If a company rips one of their writers off, they stop working for them and post their stories here or elsewhere.

That's not true at all; not even remotely close.

The cost of creating and promoting a new website is much higher than $126 or even $1000. It doesn't make sense for a company to invest money in advertising and provide unacceptable service (risking bad reviews at the same time). They could just provide unacceptable service without promoting it.

What about the quality of their papers? Most freelance writers (including the best and the worst ones) write for many companies, so it's a little harsh to assume all of their writers are bad. When someone spends money on advertising their quality cannot go below a certain level (otherwise, they'd be losing money in the long term).

Before reading essayscam I tried a website which in fact is not in the directory.

From my knowledge, a website may not be listed in EssayDirectory for one of the following reasons:

1. One of the other websites belonging to the same company is already listed in the directory. Some companies own dozens of "different" websites (not even informing their potential clients that they are a part of the same company) and it would not be fair for companies owning one website to list dozens of websites of their competition.

2. They don't want to be discussed in the public (ie. are on the "DND list"). But it's not something I can 100% confirm.

The chances of finding a reputable writing service on EssayDirectory are much higher than on Google or Bing. Even the most reputable services have some negative reviews (because they have more clients than less reputable websites).

If you have absolutely no idea about which service to choose, go with the sites that advertise here or on EssayDirectory (websites that spend money on advertising are unlikely to provide poor service).

After completion, the essay will be forwarded to an editor (to polish it and obtain the highest possible grade)?

The bold statement probably disqualifies you from entering this business. If you think legitimate companies are here to help students cheat, you're in the wrong and your business would never be "valuable and legitimate."

Again, this may not be the right business niche for you to consider (unless you don't want your writing service to be perceived as valuable and legitimate).

It looks some individuals are trying to sabotage EssayScam and the efforts of its members by stealing the content and violating the copyrights of the publishers. Any guess who they are?

wee- scam, info/index-1.htm

It's pretty much obvious that these people are also running commercial websites providing essay services. If so, do their current and prospective clients have the right to know that by purchasing services from these companies they pay to support criminal activities and risk their personal/financial information to be sabotaged and stolen too?

Having your own essay service website may be worth the effort. You are unlikely to be found in search engines under competitive keywords, but your current and prospective clients will have more confidence in your business in the long term. If you plan to work with your clients only, a simple business card-like website may be enough. Elance/Guru/Odesk are good places to find an essay website developer.

There are several types of essay website / essay service spammers who post on different forums and blogs. Below are the most notorious ones:

Write to Advertise- Posing as a satisfied client. Register as a "Student" (in the Country field select a Western country so that you are taken more seriously) and post something positive about a writing service you are trying to promote. You may mention it was your "friend" who recommended the service to you and you have absolutely no interest in promoting it so that it sounds more believable.

- Posing as a satisfied writer. Register as a "Writer" and mention the website you promote has always paid you on time and without any problems. It may not be true, but you have a dozen of writers believing your story (until the truth comes out).

- Asking a question about a writing website. Register as a "Student" and ask the community if they have ever heard about a particular writing service. Most of the experienced members scratch their head when they read the website's name because they have never heard about the website and it is not listed on EssayDirectory.com or even on Google. But by asking the question, you may count on some unsuspecting students to order from the website because it still has no positive/negative reviews.

- Comparing your website to other established services. If you have a new website that has no established reputation or no visitors, register as a "Student" or "Writer" and mention your website's name together with a couple of established websites. You may compare a Volga to a BMW, but unsuspecting clients may not initially notice the difference.

Are there any other examples of "advertising in disguise" in the academic research industry?

Essay Services / Legit Custom Writing Site [25]

Looks it was a fly-by-night operation - the website doesn't exist any more.

They have this disclaimer:

"The paper(s) supplied by HTRC to academic candidates serve as reference paper(s) for students and are not to be submitted to their institution as it is. These papers are intended to be used for research and reference purposes only."

You say you submitted their model dissertation as your own for a grade? It's not allowed by any the academic standards.

How did you find this website? There's very little information about it. It's possible to be a fly-by-night service that attract non-returning customers (if the quality was good, they would return).

I wouldn't have a problem ordering from such a company; the fact they don't hide their true location says enough about their honesty. Plus, it may even work to their advantage because a client may get a better deal than from a US/UK based company. There is a reason more and more people order directly from China - they don't have to pay the middle man for exactly the same product.

It's more important what kind of writers they work with and how much they pay them, but that's another question.

lmao

Seriously, you have no legit client to post something positive about your site? You probably try to build reputation too fast, but it's not going to work well in any kind of business.

If you're trustworthy, the trust kind of earns itself.

Right.. but there are over a thousand of unique essay research websites (at least according to EssayDirectory.com), so a new company must start somewhere to build trust. Offering a free page (or accepting payment after service) may be a good way to achieve that.

Business Models of Popular Writing Services

There are four popular example academic research service business models:

1. Website charges a customer in advance as soon as he/she submits the order form.

Popular Research ServicesADVANTAGES - client pays without delay; writer can see and take available projects right away.

DISADVANTAGES - the automatic project estimate system is prone to errors (it may either undervalue or overvalue the reasonable project cost); client may not always be 100% sure the project he "ordered" would actually be completed.

2. Website sends a quote only if they are sure they have an available writer able to complete the project.

ADVANTAGES - when client pays, he/she may be sure the project would be completed.

DISADVANTAGES - client has to wait for a quote and may not always be 100% sure a writer would be available to complete his/her project; writer who bids on a project may not be sure it would actually get paid.

3. Website charges a customer after he/she "accepted" the project.

ADVANTAGES - client doesn't risk his/her project would not be completed at all.

DISADVANTAGES - the quality of the project may not meet the highest standard because a writer risks not getting paid at all; the system is prone to abuse (from writer's/website's perspective).

4. Website provides a "free sample page;" if a customer likes it, he/she orders the rest of the project.

ADVANTAGES - client is able to check if his/her writer has a chance to successful; many prospective buyers may want to try the service for the first time and stick to it if they like it.

DISADVANTAGES - client needs to be qualified enough to judge the quality of the sample page; writer risks not getting paid for the sample paper; the whole process may take more time than expected.

-------

Maybe there are other business models out there? What are other advantages/disadvantages?

Essay Services / Test of Custompapers.com [48]

I'm a little surprised custompapers.com pays writers as low as $8.60/pg if this is accurate

CustomPapers would be surprised too. They don't have set rates, but their writers bid on projects; some may bid as low as $10, others as high as $20-$40. It's up to the writer how much they want to complete an available project for.

Btw. The sites on the DND list become less and less relevant in time and nobody cares about them any more. Has anybody noticed that?

You're probably right.

SupremeWriting seems to be a total ripoff. The website content and ideas have been stolen from CustomPapers.com. For example, compare below:

Original content

Stolen content

If someone cannot come up with original content or ideas - would you trust him/her to produce original work? I would not.

So they must get lots and lots of first-time customers.

Very good point. That may also explain why these foreign companies are forced to develop dozens of new websites every year in order to try to be competitive (just like poor writers who are forced to use multiple email accounts and new names to attract first-time customers).

I would shut it down completely and erase all backups 2 years ago when an acquaintance of mine

That only proves you hang out with criminals. If you check the link from the CustomWritings / Uvocorp scam thread, the illegal site is still up and running.

Working from home is great for most people, so competition in the online writing field is tougher and tougher each year. More and more writers from big countries like India, Russia, or Pakistan (that equals to thousands of new writers each year) aspire to be online writers each year.

The result - lower and lower per-word rates. There are popular sites that offer as little as.. 1 cent per word and 2-3 cents for "qualified native English speakers who are experts in a particular field."

1 cent per word at 300 words per page = $3
2 cents per word at 300 words per page = $6

Some people may argue that research/writing quality suffers when so many people call themselves "writers;" however, that's often not the case (and even if 20% of new writers are qualified, that still means hundreds or thousands of new writers every year).

How low can the rates go? Is it possible to reverse this trend? Are native speakers living in the US / UK / Australia able to compete with foreign writers whose English is better and better in the long term?

You don't own most of the software that you "BUY" with your computer or that you "BUY" to download

The software that I "BUY" with my computer is PRE-WRITTEN software (the equivalent of PRE-WRITTEN papers). We are talking here about CUSTOM WRITTEN PAPERS. When I hire a company to write a CUSTOM software for me, it is mine only and I (not the company that I hired) can do whatever I want with it.

When it comes to custom written papers provided by some companies, the client not only pays a premium price for the papers, but also gives up all the rights to it. Isn't it a ripoff?

When you buy an essay from most essay companies, you buy the right to use that essay without limiting what the essay company can do with it subsequently.

Here is the trick. Most (if not all) clients provide their own custom research / ideas to help the company complete the paper. The company uses the provided material and then prohibits the client (ie. the AUTHOR of the material) to use it -- RESELLING the exact material (and ideas within) for their own profit. The company uses the student's research and ideas and then profits from reselling this research and ideas WITHOUT ANY compensation to the student/client.

You're talking about TOS or "courtesy" - but it would take a semi-smart lawyer to prove that the student/client who provided research/ideas, or even detailed instructions on how to complete his/her custom project is in fact a CO-AUTHOR of the project. And he/she is entitled to compensation every time the project he/she paid for is resold by the company.

It's quite simple, even if you didn't grasp the analogy: the dealer ("the essay company that sold a custom written paper") is doing the renting. All the client can do is to bend over and ask when and for how long they want to rent their car (ie. resell "their" "custom written essay"). And hope it won't be happening too frequently.

but yes: If you buy a car, you can rent it out or lend it for free to whomever you wish afterwards, or even burn it, as long as you don't claim insurance on it or do it on public property.

Since you give up the title to the car to the dealer (ie. you do not own the copyright) - you cannot lend it or sell it WITHOUT the dealer's authorization. EVEN IF you designed the car (ie. did your own research). Same with essays bought from some companies - by doing business with these companies, you give up your right to OWN the essay, even after having paid a premium price for it (and doing your own research).

Again, smart students should demand that the "custom essays" and their own research work (even if it's only one sentence) should not be put up for sale without any commission to them.

If you pay a premium to rent a brand new car from the owner, it's really none of your concern that he may subsequently rent it out to others for less as a used rental car.

YOU GOT IT. So we can now agree that the term: "BUY a custom essay" is misleading. Because, in fact, you cannot BUY a custom essay from some companies - you can RENT it only.

Still, some not so smart students pay a premium price for renting (and some of them work for free by providing their own research). That was my initial point.
