Let's admit it, even if a student makes a recommendation to a friend, the next question is, "What social media is he on?" The students base their final decisions on the number of likes, retweets, and reposts that a writer gets on his social media accounts. The more, the better. Yes, students have placed their faith in social media these days because they don't understand that it is easy to fake the likes, retweets, and reposts. Being Insta-famous is more important than having "word of mouth" promotion because the latter does not come with an idea or glamour and popularity. Yes, students consider academic writers somewhat of celebrities depending on the number of their social media followers. The more people who follow the writer, the more reliable and trustworthy that person seems. So yeah, I believe that social media does a better job than word of mouth these days.
