Writing Careers / About writerbay.com ? [54]

Only an owner/affiliate would know about a 'new' company. It's definitely not based in the US/UK/Australia. Regarding a 'direct interaction' with the owner - it just doesn't make sense (does the company owner work for free?)

Both papers4you.com and coursework4you.co.uk appear to be gone (the first domain has already been snapped by a domain auction website). I'm still wondering what makes students choose foreign / unknown services - is it a low price or something else? Either way, Paypal won't automatically remove an account so even if it exists, it doesn't mean anything. At this point, the best way to go is to accept they are no longer in business...

From a logical viewpoint, if you are good at what you do (and are still in business to provide a service), you are not supposed to be unemployed - unless you got fired. Besides, I don't believe they have a single real professor (or even a PhD) among their team; the name is nothing but a marketing play. If you got fired, you are most likely not good at what you do. Would you hire a landscaping company named - 'Unemployed Landscaping Contractors Inc' to do an electrical job? Just because someone is a contractor (or someone has finished a college) doesn't mean they can do other specialized jobs.

The text has definitely been stolen, but the link doesn't seem to prove it was the 'Prescotts' - I feel it's some Kenyan writer (check the poster's username: Currilus, probably not associated with a real writing service).

May 04, 2017

I hope it stays - because something fishy's going on. Where did you find the material was posted? I found several results of the 'stolen' text, but it appears it was stolen by some Kenyan freelancers: google.com/search?q=%22In+a+sea+of+uncertainty%2C+you+can+pick+a+writer+or+essay+company%22 - where did you find this text on Prescott's website (or maybe in some other marketing materials)?

It appears from your post you're on a budget -- but then why would you want to overpay 200-300% for an UKessays service (considering the fact you can get the same or almost the same quality from another reputable UK or US-based provider). I'm not sure if a 5-10% better quality (it's still debatable if the quality would actually be better since it all depends on the freelance writer assigned to your order and the same freelance writer usually works for other - competing - services) is worth 200% extra.

Writing Careers / Kenyan Writers - stop hiring them? [162]

It's a little confusing - why would a scammer pretend to be from Kenya (wouldn't it be counter-productive?)
Major
Apr 20, 2017

It's an obvious spam because I could find the 'order page' within two clicks. Still, I would not trust this service - guess where they get the essays they publish from? Hint - a student who orders a 'custom written paper' pays a full price for the paper to find out that their '100% original paper' is available for free (or for 20% off the original price) for other students. It's like buying a brand new car and paying a full price so that on the next day your neighbors could use it for free at any time they wish to. It's a win-win for: 1 - the service, 2 - (possibly) for procrastinating students. It's a questionable deal for the student who sponsors the whole operation.

Apr 19, 2017

Hm I see - but then writers can go to places like upwork or freelancer where they pay nothing unless they get a job. I don't know who would pay for 'job opportunities access.' Besides, who can guarantee the order inquires are not fake - just look at all those online dating sites where 50-80% of profiles are fake (their goal is to attract paying members who think these profiles are real).
Major
Apr 18, 2017

What does it mean that they are 'selling accounts' - do you mean they sell personal information of the current/former freelance writers?
Major
Apr 17, 2017

Try using a little more reading comprehension.

So when you state: "EssayCrate has been booked out for the rest of the month! We'll be finalizing our new site. order form will be back up the 20th!" - I understand the form will be back on the 20th BUT no orders due by Apr 30 will be taken (since you are 'booked' for the rest of the month).
Major
Apr 17, 2017

we are booked for a little bit and can't accept orders (temporarily)

It's still misleading - you are booked because your form doesn't work? If I was a writer, I could claim: "I'm booked until June" (not because I have pending orders, but because I don't have no orders but hope it will pick up in June OR I'm on vacation until June).

Hey, we can't accept new orders right now cause we are a bit booked

Because I don't believe you are 'booked' (unless you have one or two writers in your team).
Major
Apr 17, 2017

I visited the site today and it says: "EssayCrate has been booked out for the rest of the month! We'll be finalizing our new site. order form will be back up the 20th!"

This notice may be perceived as dishonest since it is general enough that it would be still valid in 2018+ and the statement about 'having been booked' is bogus too (well, technically if there are 0 orders and no more orders are being accepted, it may be considered as 'booked,' but still..). Nevertheless, I thing the owner used to post here and maybe he/she'll be able to clarify.

The best/only way to start online is to create a website - do you have one yet? Then, the hardest part - promote/market the website/services to students and create a brand; it's going to take at least a couple of years. I guess there is no other way than paid advertising (you may try to spam social media, but in general it's a waste of time). An alternative ('free') option would be word-of-mouth marketing which would require your current US/UK customers who are very satisfied with your service to recommend you to their friends.

the quality will be higher than the one offered by essay writing companies

How do you know that - are your writers from Ukraine? If so, the quality may be higher than delivered by Kenyan writers, but would it be high enough to earn trust of US / UK students?

Essay Services / edubirdie.com any opinions? [35]

As far as I know, there are only 3-5 genuine essay writing/research services based in the UK; the rest are foreign websites pretending to be located in the UK.

The agency in question has posted the following job on a freelance writing website: webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:YkdluJpQNMkJ: peopleperhour.com/job/i-need-to-proofread-a-website-1469503+&cd=4&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

It strongly suggest none of the members of their writing team is a native English speaker.

Description

Experience Level: Entry Level
Num. of words: 800-850
Industry: Education
Topic: Proofreading a website
Tone: Other
Extensive research needed: no
Extra notes: Hi,

I need you to read 10 website pages and proofread them for mistakes.

I need you to fix any grammar/orthographic mistakes. Also, there should be everything fine with the general meaning.

The texts don't require any major changes so it shouldn't be difficult. Please send me the texts with the markings where you've made corrections; this will help me to see what mistakes have been fixed.

Why are there only 250 words per page (it seems only shady companies would provide 250 words per page). Anyway, are the rates flexible (can your writers name their own price?)
Major
Mar 11, 2017

Today (March 2017), the terms read: "When you scan a document, you agree that 3 months after completion of your scan, we will automatically upload your essay to our student essays database." These terms were changed somewhere between Dec 2016 and March 2017 (ie. within the last few months). See the screenshots:

Custom work to be publicized after 9 months.

Custom work to be publicized after 3 months.

What's most troubling is that they have NOT changed the legally-crucial 'terms last revised' date, while changing the terms at the same time. Since 2012, the terms state:

Terms last revised: 9th January 2012

- despite the fact, as proven above, the terms have been updated multiple times since Jan 2012.

Now, let's go through the ordering process on UKEssays.com in relation to their plagiarism scanner. On their 'Guarantees' page they state: "Every piece of work we deliver comes with a dedicated plagiarism report using Viper [ScanMyEssay], our bespoke plagiarism scanner." That means, each 'custom essay' ordered from them is bound by the Viper/ScanMyEssay's terms. Consequently, each 'custom written essay' written by UKEssays becomes public (available through Google/Bing search) within 3 months of delivery. Is this what students who pay 1.5-5 times more than they would have paid elsewhere expect? Probably not. I can imagine smart professors assigning a writing project at start of a term/course and then using a simple Google search to find the 'custom written essay' there. It would be even worse / riskier with big orders like dissertations that sometimes take up to a year to be checked and approved.

How do they explain the reasons for publicizing their 'custom-written papers' within 3 months of purchase? Here it goes: ".. we will automatically upload your essay to our student essays database which will appear on one of our network of websites so that other students may use it to help them write their own essays." So, at first, it may seem their reasons are philanthropic.. until you realize it is baloney. By writing AND uploading the written content (originally sold to a student 3 months ago as '100% original') on their website, they kill two birds with one stone. First - they get paid a lot of money for the original content (which they rent to a student for 3 months). Second - they don't have to pay professional website content writers to keep their website updated (Google and Bing rank websites that regularity publish content higher than those that don't). In result, if a student pays $50 per page, their REAL revenue per page is closer to $60-70 (assuming they would have to pay at least $10-$20 per page of original website content).

It is fascinating to watch a 'non-foreign' company trying all the tricks in the world to mislead/outsmart/con/you-name-it their own customers. In the last decade or so the negative focus was on 'foreign services' that scam and steal from students and writers. However, at this point, I'm not sure which ones are actually the 'leaders' in this area.

Yep, this is how it usually works. Perhaps this story will be similar/related to this recent one: telegraph.co.uk/education/2017/02/21/university-students-could-fined-handedcriminal-records-plagiarised/ which may make running an 'essay mill' business difficult in the UK.

Btw - sites like UkEssays have nobody but themselves to blame. Their greed, feeling of impunity, and their illegal promotion of 'guaranteed grade / guaranteed degree, every time' has created this negative environment.

Essay Services / Has anyone Tried UnityForCollege? [19]

Right.. 'plagiarism report' -- this is where even more money is lost and more risk is involved. A paper run through a 'professional' plagiarism checker is worth 20% of a custom-written paper that has never been run through a 'professional' plagiarism checker. It's like posting a paper on facebook in a 'public / indexable / anonymous / worldwide' mode and then trying to prove you were the original author of the paper when 20 other students copied it and claimed as their own.

An .edu email can be bought for as little as 20 cents; while it is some small level of protection, it's no challenge for Kenyan 'artists' who have dozens of them, ready for any occasion ;) - google.com/search?q=.edu+email+for+sale

Essay Services / Has anyone Tried UnityForCollege? [19]

The system appears to work almost exactly the same as the two failed ones; actually, the other ones were assuring customers they hired the best professional writers/researchers/editors (not only random people who call themselves 'students' or 'tutors').

- A rating system is useless (you don't expect a student who doesn't know how to do their own assignment to accurately rate another student who doesn't know much more).

- In case of failure (an assignment not completed at all or completed incorrectly) - the only repercussion is a request for a refund. That's fine, but a refund won't compensate a failed grade or deducted points for late submission.

- 60-80% of 'students' who would sign up as contractors are destined to be located in foreign / ESL countries. Some of them would create multiple accounts under false names if one of the old ones were suspended. There's little control over the process.

There were very similar services in the past called essaybrunch and essaybay - the whole system is prone to fraud and abuse, so neither exists any more. Allowing anonymous students / 'researchers' taking care of an important academic project is never a good idea.

Essay Services / TheWriteScholars.com [13]

The domain of this site was registered on 17-feb-2017 (4 days ago). It took the OP a couple of days to create a website and viola - it's time to advertise it ;). The WHOIS info shows it's a private / proxy registration (so customers have no way of contacting them via alternate means if they are scammed).

I tried them in graduate school and received A's for all my papers

Do you realize the site has existed only for a couple of days? As a business owner, you need to be a little smarter when you try to promote your service on your own ;) The bottom line - the site has no reputation (and no paid customers) whatsoever; it may take a couple of years for it to determine whether it's scam or not.

Essay Services / Has anyone Tried UnityForCollege? [19]

The OP's post is an obvious spam. Since he's the website owner it sounds a little funny when he pretends to write the ad as a college student (unless it's a typical level of writing their writers represent in general). A college kid in debt ordering custom essays.. Regarding a plagiarism report - it actually makes a 'custom-written paper' useless because it stores it in databases which may be shared by other big academic or commercial databases.

In general, I cannot get why you consider students dumb. They've been living in the technology area for more than most of us did and they know ordering from a random website, not associated with a real/registered company or a real ENL freelance writer is always risky.

Ousbourne, it's all good but you are not a student and you have NEVER paid a dime for a writing service. There have been dozens of people like you who pretended to be "students" but are in fact company owner or writers. So whatever you wrote above is just a marketing ploy and an attempt to fool other readers :)

Haven't the background researched revealed the site's WHOIS is connected to Panama? An IP address of a server is meaningless. Spelling mistakes on the site, eg. "12 Point Times New Roman/Aerial." Most of all, the domain has been registered several months ago - age is one of the few factors that cannot easily be faked ;)
Major
Jan 31, 2017

As far as reviews are concerned, the general are rules simple:

1. The "really good reviews" are usually fake (especially if they are short and written in broken English).

2. The "really good reviews" published on all those "top essay writer websites" are 100% fake (written by the service freelance writers, usually in broken English as well).

3. If you're unsure which service to go with, verifying for how many years the service has been in business may be a good indication of legitimacy. But do not only check the 'Copyright X-Y' years only - these are usually fake too. In fact, there are only a few services that have a legal name and have been registered with the state (either in the US or UK); the rest are just domain names and services that probably pay no taxes (in foreign countries it may still be possible).
